Where to live in Liverpool?

I've just started a job at Stanlow, but favour Liverpool for accommodation, and I'm looking at options of where to live in the city, having only visited Awesome walls so far. I'm new to the area and don't know it at all well so will accept any advice on which areas to look at. My criteria is that it has to be close to the city centre (for either tunnel) or further to the southern side of the city (for the bridge around the other way to Stanlow). Any suitable locations with prefer easy access to countryside for my girlfriend equestrian activities would be good too.

One last consideration is that we both have cars, so minimalist style modern flats with only a single car parking space assigned to them aren't suitable.

Any ideas peeps?

Thanks in advance

Cheers in advance.

To be honest, from your criteria you would probably be better living somewhere nice on The Wirral. Better for work and good horse riding country.
 Emily Goodman 15 Feb 2008
In reply to David Hooper: Do you know any nice areas on the Wirral? City life (or easy access to the city) appeals more to us at the moment whilst we find out feet in the area, for getting to the climbing wall, and for me to get a job, just as long as we can escape to the countryside easily from the city! Ideas please........
Thanks!
 David Hooper 15 Feb 2008
In reply to Emily Goodman:

Well Liverpool is pretty well situated to escape from. Wirral 20 min,Cheshire 30 min. Clwyds 45 min. Lancs quarries 1 hour, western peak 1 hour. 1 1/2 hours from 4 national Parks and John Lennon Airport on your doorstep.

If you do want to live here then I would suggest somewhere in the South End ranging from Sefton Park/Lark Lane/Aigburth area out as far as Allerton and Woolton.

Personally I think the North End is an entirely different city and dont get a good feel from it.

There are also the towns along the Sefton Coast.

In reply to David Hooper: That's given us some places to start looking, thanks.
If you have any experiences of any particularly good or bad agents to rent from let us know!

Being from South Liverpool..Sefton Park...I would reiterate what Dave Hooper said...South is nice...north is grim.
After saying that Crosby is OK and just outside the city to the north lies the really upmarket town of Formby where all the footballers live. Great beach voted 'best in Britain' in the Independent, sand dunes, red squirrels and natterjack toads thereabouts...golf courses...leafy village with your middle class stores like Marks and Sparks food hall Oddbins,Waitrose and various delis.
Nice restaurants and Southport just up the road.

Yes...if I was moving back to Merseyside it would be to Formby.

In reply to Jonno:

I agree about the beach the Sefton coastline especially the section running from Hightown to Ainsdale is just awesome.

Southport your joking right?? the place is rancid can't stand the friggin place I drive up and down from Bootle to Crossens many times everyday due to work.

To the OP if your moving to liverpool head south like the some others are saying or if moving to north Liverpool head into Sefton even parts of Bootle were I live beat anything in North Liverpool.

Places to live in Sefton: Maghull/Lydiate, Hightown, Formby, Blundellsands, Marshside, Crossens, Birkdale

In reply to ally smith: I would ech what others have said. Woolton, Allerton, Childwall are all nice places.

In reply to ally smith: I think I asked this exact question about 4 years ago...

I'm afraid with some honesty I have to say we never found anywhere in Liverpool itself that met our wishes. Being European City of Roadworks 2008 isn't helping much either. The burnt out housing on the various roads in never sets the place up well. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there are lovely places - I just haven't found them. As ever most of the people I've met have been very friendly but there's a fair few who drag down the average too - I guess I tend to see more of them at work so have a skewed perspective.

We ended up in the countryside south of Stockton Heath (Warrington) and it's been great. More horses than cars go down our road and a good network of paths means interesting running. 5 mins to the M56, 10 to the Bridge, 25 to Chester, less than 2 hours to Lakes or Snowdonia etc plus the choice of two airports. 2 Hours by train to London if needed as well (well it was till Network Frail mucked up the Rugby station section). Wall in Warrington as well.
PM me through my forum email if you want. We're needing to sell later this year BTW so if you're interested...!

I used to live in Frodsham. Has its own crag and next door is Helsby crag too.

In reply to ally smith: My father in law lives in Hoylake on the Wirrall, which is ok. I would not live to the north side of Liverpool unless you choose somewhere like Formby or southport. Its only about 45 minutes by train from Southport to the centre of Livepool.

In reply to icnoble: The areas of Southport I would live in are Birkdale and Ainsdale. I certainly wouldnt to live much closer to Liverpool than that

I have a few friends who live around Sefton Park, near to Lark Lane. It seems pretty nice around there.

Ally, as has been said, check out around Sefton Park/Lark Lane. It's got a soulful feel. And don't forget that < coughs discreetly > other venue I mentioned.

I think your being a little unfair there lol I mean come on Preston f*cking hell thats shit tip and a bit more.

Liverpool's a strange place most other cities and towns seem to have good and bad post code areas Liverpool doesn't. Each area seems to have good and bad places separated by a street, road, park etc

Take Bootle/Litherland for example Hawthorne Road, Stanley Road, Marsh Road, Linacre Road etc all shit tips Southport Road, Bailey Drive, Park Lane etc pleasant areas to live step over the bridge into Galsworthy shit tip cross over onto Ennerdale, Thirlmere,Spooner etc nice areas. Litherland Park very nice area.

Birkdale/Ainsdale only if you can afford it and thats only a small area from about Grosvenor, Lulworth, Lancaster out towards the coast, and parts of the roads leading off Aughton road. You seriously cant be suggesting you would pay the money to live in Ainsdale/Birkdale if you had to live somewhere like Shakespear Street? Central Avenue estate??

In reply to ally smith: I did 10 years in South Liverpool, Aigburth, close enough to town to go out and get a cab home at stupid o'clock, close enough to Lark Lane to go out and walk home (without being in fear), close to Sefton Park (really nice) and also close to the prom, great for a stroll with the dog on a windy day.

Definitely look on the south side!

a daily commute involving the Runcorn bridge (twice) is not ideal

Try living in Birmingham or Hull or East Manchester. Somewhere that isn't Liverpool. Unless you like being surrounded by whining thieves.

In reply to ally smith: There's some great places to live over the hill from Frodsham if you're not bothered about the nightlife! Still easy to get to Chester and the motorway network plus you could pedal to Stanlow. A good friend is looking to buy round there and has been carefully looking at the market for some months now, he's shown me some fantastic houses for the price.

Good luck!

In reply to ally smith: If your main commute is going to be across the river, I would choose to live on the same side as where you work as the tunnels and Runcorn bridge can be a mare! You can still get into town by train though and the Wirral is 30 minutes closer to Wales by the time you have negociated the tunnels!
Chris James 18 Feb 2008
In reply to ally smith:

Living on the Wirral makes more sense to me too. Very handy for Stanlow and easy and quick to get into Liverpool on public transport.

I can't imagine much horse riding in central Liverpool.

Have you ever been there you BRAIN DEAD F*CKING MAGGOT? Read the replies above and below. Liverpool has many cosy, middle class areas and it's share of dodgy areas. Which city doesn't?
