hello,

(ignore the picture, this is about numbers!)

looking at this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cjdknitting/2827787807/meta/

what do all the oodles of zeroes refer to?

Here's most of them:

0x0013 ThumbnailImageValidArea
0x001d Canon MyColors Tags
0x001e FirmwareRevision
0x0023 Categories ((2 values: 1. always 8, 2. Categories - Bit 0 = People, Bit 1 = Scenery, Bit 2 = Events, Bit 3 = User 1, Bit 4 = User 2, Bit 5 = User 3, Bit 6 = To Do)
0x0024 FaceDetect1
0x0025 FaceDetect2

Got them from the documentation for ExifTool ( http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/ ). A couple are still missing, but ExifTool has the best metadata support I've ever seen, so not sure where to look next! More details about the tags here:

ohhhh. Thank you very much! The magic of not being lazy (like me) and googling!

In reply to CJD:

The downside to Exif data is that there is no standard to it. The Camera manufacturers can record whatever fields they want in there and unless they publish details its a case of "reverse engineering" what each one is.

Some are fairly obvious, but others less so.

More info at that fountain of knowledge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif

For those with Nikon's there is some useful information at http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/Nikon.html#LensData01

and some cannon stuff at http://gvsoft.homedns.org/exif/makernote-canon-type1.html (although it may not match everyones cannon).

Ooops, sorry for the duplication of haydn's searching.

In reply to slacky:

nope, it's all good. Interesting that they're not uniform across all cameras - I didn't know that either.

In reply to Removed User:
No problem - I'd already had quite a hunt through the ExifTool documentation to sort out my blog post regarding metadata and Adobe Lightroom, so it was all to hand.
