Does anyone know of or use any camera shops they'd recommend for getting some old Canon SLR's serviced/repaired?

In the north yorkshire region or surrounding
thanks

I was about to point you at Prestons in Harrogate but it would appear to have gone... it's where i got my first camera.

I got my rolleicord serviced by Blighs of Leeds, which I know isn't North Yorkshire but which might be pretty close, depending on which bit of North Yorkshire you're in - it's a pretty big place!

I'd say no to Bligh's. I recently took my camera in to Bligh's to get the screen mirror cleaned and they gave me an estimate of £30 ready 2 days later. 2 days later they haven't done it because a full clean including sensor will cost £47.50. I tell them not to bother and just do the screen and mirror. Anyone want to guess weather it cost me £30 or £47.50 to get my camera out of the shop before I went on holiday?

In reply to John Wood:

oh.

I had good service from them - a £20 deposit whilst they looked at it, then they rang me and said it would be another £27 to clean it up and replace the mirror. It cost £47 all in, and was ready when they said it would be.

still, I'm sure there are lots of others out there. Stash, where in North Yorkshire are you? If you're in North North Yorkshire, there's a shop in Darlington (iirc) that ICE and Richard Carter mention quite a bit, whose name I can't remember, that might be of use.

Maybe it would be worth asking Cannon, if you don't mind mailing your stuff? They may do it themselves.....

Heh, Well the mirror and screen came back nice and clean... (and don't get me started on the jessops blower that covered the mirror and screen ing guff in the first place

then of course there was the time I asked about a second hand D70 and they tried to explain that it came with a 70-300 lens and that I'd need to buy another lense "if you want to shoot wide angle" in a "if you want to try exotic photography kind of voice".. ...then I asked about shutter acutations and turning it on... ... shop said no...

Blighs didn't entertain the notion of looking at Natashica The First.

In reply to Blue Straggler:

oh - what I was trying to explain in the post above was that *I* had a positive experience of them but that I appreciate that others might not have. Same as with any other shop.

That's just like them. Bastards.

Fair nuff.

In reply to CJD:

I know. I in turn am only reporting my experience. They were courteous and did not waste my time or rip me off, so that IS positive.

To the OP - Richard Carter recommended this guy though you'd need to post your camera.

I had been in touch with him about Natashica The First, but he doesn't do TLR / MF stuff. He did reply promptly to my email though!

In reply to John Wood and Blue Straggler:

just a thought, but could you offer Stash any positive recommendations in North Yorkshire?
 Blue Straggler 31 Oct 2007
In reply to CJD:

I am joining your positive recommendation of Bligh's, regardless of it not technically being in North YOrkshire and regardless of the fact that they were not interested in looking at my TLR. Canon 35mm SLRs are, I imagine, more "standard" fare.

I did not have a bad experience with Blighs. As I mentioned in a previous post.

In reply to CJD:

Fraid not, I don't have a scooby as to a good camera shop in North Yorkshire. If I did have I would have included the relevant info along with my Bligh's rant.

I really need to let go of this...

In reply to John Wood:

And for balance, its their Royson Vasey approach to customer service that I object to, rather than their technical ablilty. They did a perfectly admirable job of cleaning the mirror and screen, for a 40% unagreed mark up on the estimate when they knew the exact scope of work at the time of giving said estimate.

If you want the camer repaired properly, and it's by a recongised make, canon Nikon etc, contact the manufacurer they are more qualified and will have the test equipment required to work on a ny form of Microelectronics inside a modern Dslr. Older camer shops will have a look at it, but will outsource the repair to a qualifed and teched up agent to actaully do the work.

I can name one really really really bad one, Nicholas Cameras in Camden, trust me, you really don't want to take it there. It may never come back, mine didn't. They're thieves of the highest order.
