Hey.

I'm renewing my Alpine insurance. Al be wanting annuel cover as I'm going out for a while. Last year I was with BMC, which I know are great if you had to make a claim. But the fact you had only 93 day trips was annoying. Now that they've put the trip length down to 45 days, I'll not be going with them again because of this.

I was wondering what other people are using. There must be a good few people in the same situation. I've heard the Austrain Alpine club is good, but they don't cover you medical wise or gear wise.

Alo whats the deal with the E111? What sort of support does that give you incase of an accident?
My mate also told me about the 'Aux vieux Campeur' insurance.

Do some people have one insurance for climbing and one for medical? Not sure.

any help would be great.

Cheers

Its now called an EHIC card and you will need it to get some types of treatment in Europe. Most insurance companies require you to have it and will not pay for things which would have been free if you'd had one.

You can get it online here: http://www.nhs.uk/NHSEngland/Healthcareabroad/EHIC/Pages/Applyingandrenewin...
There are also several other websites where you can get one but some charge a fee which is basically a scam as its free so go via the NHS site.

Re other insurance companies, you could try snowcard:

Don't know what their trip limit is offhand but if its not enough you can ring them and they'll normally extend your cover, for an extra fee of course.

In reply to pec: Sorry I ment to say I had my E111, but was just wondering what you do with it if you had an accident. Do they cover hospital costs?

E111 is now EHIC. It basically gives ou NHS style medical support in EU countries. You can apply online. It's free (so you've got the wrong website if it's talking about charging you).

EHIC will do nothing about emergency evacuation or repatriation; nor anything about kit/financial loss. You need separate insurance for that for which your choice is Snowcard (Snocard?) or BMC.

I go BMC
