Cave Man, Cummingston

I'm a bit confused by what I thought was Cave Man at Cummingston and hoping someone can shed some light. I thought it was the full left to right traverse, staying low till a boost up to join Pockets and finish on the right arete. But the description here and in Ted's guide suggest it follows Pockets back left to the Stegosaurus arete (which seems like a weird thing to do). So what's the problem I describe?

I know Cave Man True Finish goes all the way to the right arete but staying low, so what is it if you stay high?

Is it not just described that way because it's often done as a circuit?

Maybe. I've not done Cave Man and in my memory the hard bit that I kept falling off was near the right arete. Or maybe I wasn't going high and was on the True Finish.

In the old Bouldering in Scotland guide its described as a straight L-R with a drop down to edges, which is presumably whats now called the True Finish.

The idea of it being a circular problem is entirely new to me!

I think the problem finishes when you reach the jugs - no return to start or finish on right arête necessary. I guess you get to write up your own variation - or not.
I find it nails anyway - still haven’t got to the jugs! Seems harder than quite a few of the 7a / 7a+ . Each to their own I guess…

Hi Gaz, the original problem goes to jugs about 2/3 of the way along the wall then up to higher jugs and back to the left arete quite easily. It could be lapped as a circuit. This is based on the old paper guide by Iain MacDonald(?) that was floating about in the late 2000s.

Last problem in this for some beta: vimeo.com/57870551

Cheers gforce. Yes, I've always found it harder than the grade suggests. We're planning to stay just along the coast for a few days so I was thinking of local things to try while pottering with the family and this one leapt out as one of the original classics to go back to.
