i thought from the question you were implying it was the same boots. ninjas on parthian (pinky vest and light blue cotton tights), probably soem sportiva things on NS.

the first 3 on bred pit are right i'm pretty sure, not bentley then.....

OP Tyler 22 Dec 2003
In reply to daveP:

Sorry, badly worded. Yes Ninjas on PS (in the photos anyway) thought it was Pink tights on NS? Bently was the only one you got wrong on the BP question

In reply to Tyler:

Dear Tyler

Can I claim the booby prize, as I can not answer any of your questions.

 CragHead 22 Dec 2003
In reply to daveP:

Malc Smith?
OP Tyler 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Norrie Muir:

I thought most of these questions were quite easy. Maybe I should open it up to John Cox after all!

Wasn't McClure or Malcom Smith either, it was reported in OTE
 CragHead 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler:

Heason, Dunning, Sodhi, Moffatt, Fawcett, Dawes, Dunne, Houlding, Gresham, Anderson, Creamer, Haston, Brown, Bonington?? - God known !!!
johncoxmysteriously1 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler:

Actually you're pretty safe. I can only do number one. I have a reasonable guess at number 2 and Brad Pit, and I am thinking about the CC guidebook one....

You're just guessing now! You have mentioned the right name though.

In reply to John Cox:

hang your head in shame, especailly the guide book cover one.
tim stubley 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Adders: don't worry, it's a question about climbers, not boulderers you wouldn't be expected to understand ;-b

Yes, as many cakes as could be eaten in a single sitting at Beck Hall cafe, do you know the route they used? Or the winning time?

Was it International or Independant, wasn't Brendan Foster either, it was a climber.

OP Tyler 22 Dec 2003
In reply to daveP:

No, Crag head mentioned him in the list but I'm not sure he meant to (big clue!)
 Adders 22 Dec 2003

anyone going to help explain it? ron or cubby? eh? in relation to what/where? etc
daveP 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler: joe brown the younger then?
OP Tyler 22 Dec 2003
In reply to daveP:
closer!
johncoxmysteriously1 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler:

Well, that's my guess out of the window. Steve Dunning, then?

I rather thought it was Pete Hurley or Ryan Pasquill. In fact I'm still not so sure it wasn't. OTE doesn't know everything!

I'm proving amazingly bad at remembering what's actually on the covers of the various CC guides. Let's try and see who can help me: Chronological from the earliest

Tremadog: Don't know, Cardiac Arete, Strawberries/Dream Topping, don't know.

Mid-Wales: Darker Angel, don't know.

Gogarth: Positron/Ordinary Route, don't know (think it's something on South Stack, tho')

Cloggy: Don't know, The Axe.

Cwn Silyn: Crucible, don't know, Resurrection

Pass: Don't know, Memory Lane (or is it Curfew?), Slape Direct

Can't think it's the Lleyn or Lliwedd.

Ogwen: Don't know/don't know.

I've no clue, let's be honest! Are we talking the very front cover or will the back cover do?
OP Tyler 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Adders:

I suppose its really just who is the Don? (the answer is Cubby BTW)
johncoxmysteriously1 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Adders:

Was Ron Fawcett or Dave 'Cubby' Cuthbertson the greater climber? Each had their supporters in the early eighties.

In reply to Tyler: fawcett? i'm getting bored now!
johncoxmysteriously1 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler:

Since the kettles are out of the bag, I'll try Martin Crook. Tho' it could have been George Smith.
OP Tyler 22 Dec 2003
In reply to johncoxmysteriously1:

you haven't mentioned the route yet in your list, I'll give you a clue when it first appeared it was probably not totally free.

OP Tyler 22 Dec 2003
In reply to daveP:

OK then, it was Andy Brown, am I the only person to spend their life reading the news sections of the climbing mags? I should get out more!
johncoxmysteriously1 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler:

No 2 - Oceans of Emotion, Little Orme?

Newcastle midfielder - Gary Speed? Robert? Errr- God, you wouldn't think I was a football fan/climbing trivia buff, would you?

JESUS !! I never heard of him !!

Now you mention it, I think it was Independant - Ian Horrocks?

In reply to Tyler: Number 8 was lots of cakes, do I get a bonus point for knowing the route (free and even easier) and that mark Leach won?
OP Tyler 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler:

I must say I'm pretty surprised that more people didn't get more of these correct:

> 1) An ascent without what is an ascent without dignity? Who said it about what?

Kettle, Brewing up with Morley Wood, I thought it was George Smith but it could have been Martin Crook.

> 2) Peak Limestone Rockfax mentions one Welsh route, what and where is it?

Gallop Step at Clogwyn y Bustach is compared to some route at Long Tor quarry because they both start and finish on the ground.

> 3) Flying visit from a Newcastle midfielder?

Lee Bowyer was the first ascentionist of High Flyer at Stanage.

> 4) What boots did John Dunne wear on the FA of New Statesman and Parthenon Shot?

Ninja on PS and some One Sport pink and light blue things on NS (and a fright mask)

>
> 5) Which climbers feature twice on the front cover of OTE in the first 30 issues?

Ben Moon and Chris Plant

> 6) Name the first four ascentionists of Brad Pit?

Andy Brown was the mystery fourth ascentionist

> 7) Which route has featured twice on the front cover of CC North Wales guide books?

The Skull, Cyrn Las. On the front of the 1978 Pass Guide and on the front of the previous Llanberis North Guide.

> 8) What was the prize for the first ever speed climbing competition held at Malham? Who won?

As many cakes as could be eaten in one sitting at Beck Hall, John Dunne (the route was Free and even easier and was top roped in about 30 seconds)

> 9) When will the new Northen Limestone Rockfax be out?

I was hoping Alan James would come and answer this.

> 10) Ron or Cubby?

Cubby, though I recognise this is a minority view.

> 11) What does ISCA stand for and who was its inaugural president?

Independant Sport Climbers Association, Duncan McCallum

johncoxmysteriously1 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler:

Well, I didn’t have much chance there; I’ve never seen the previous Llanberis North guide. Does the Milburn guide really have The Skull on the cover? I’d have said Quasar if I’d had to guess. I was hoping the answer was Darker Angel which is the front of MidWales and the frontispiece of Meirionnydd – (the climber’s on a different route in the latter, to be fair).

As for Lee Bowyer!! I thought he’d retired. And while I think I have at some point noticed that the first ascentionist of HF was one L Bowyer, how I could have known it was also Lee I don’t know.

And Ximeneans, btw, would say that your ‘visit’ was unfairly misleading.
OP Tyler 22 Dec 2003
In reply to johncoxmysteriously1:

What the heck is a Ximenean? PGE or the database on this site tell you that L Bowyer is Lee Bowyer but if you will insist on using outmoded definitive guides....
Norrie Muir 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler:

Dear Tyler

I thought they were all trick questions, that was why I did not pick Cubby. I agree with your answer, Cubby is his middle name, not his first like Ron, not many people know that. What is my prize anyway?

Norrie
johncoxmysteriously1 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler:

Ximines was the (a) doyen of crossword setters. He laid down standards of cluemanship which some crossword buffs hold to, while others regard them as unnecessarily restrictive.
Peter Walker 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler:
> Yes, as many cakes as could be eaten in a single sitting at Beck Hall cafe, do you know the route they used? Or the winning time?

Free And Even Easier; about 32.19 seconds do I remember rightly?
Peter Walker 22 Dec 2003
In reply to Peter Walker: I didn't look at the above post with the answers (honest); and I must admit I thought that Mark Leach won; whatever, if memory serves it was in High's review of the 1980s, whenever that was published (probably Jan 1990).
johncoxmysteriously1 23 Dec 2003
In reply to Tyler: No wonder I couldn't do the route in NW. My Milburn guide is 1981, not 1978 (an edition every three years, eh? Those were the days.) and it does indeed have Quasar on the (back cover). And Lord on the front.
OP Tyler 23 Dec 2003
In reply to johncoxmysteriously1:

Have you been double checking my answers?

> an edition every three years, eh? Those were the days

and a N Wales supplement the following year.

Are you going to do a quiz for us (nothing too cryptic please)?
