Hi

Not sure if this has been posted before or not! Does anyone know the law on climbing buildings in the UK without permission (if you get caught that is)? Just a hefty fine or a slapped wrist???? Also are there any buildings or type of buildings that you can actually place gear ????

Cheers
Tom

Dunno but most of the stunts you hear about end in a caution. I fancy an on-sight of the Blackpool tower, just need plenty of slings i'd say.
<wonders if it'd be a first accent>
Any worthy cause like me to post a banner??

In reply to GirlieEyes: the position in English Law is that if any damage was caused, however minor, then you could be prosecuted for criminal damage. if you climbed a building that resulted in a mass public hysteria,ie. everyone thought that you were going to jump off and road were closed etc, then technically you could be prosecuted for causing a public nuisance.

You could get some sort of grief for 'Unnecessary Endangerment', which is what BASE jumpers usually get I think

A friend and I were once low level traverssing a building in Preston one evening after work when a police car pulled up. "Get down off there immediately" shouted a police woman. "What do you think you are doin?" she asked agressively. "We are climbers and we are training" was said assertively in reply. She looked shocked, said "ok", got back in the car and drove off! I don't think that was the reply she was expecting! Had us laughing.

The moral is therfore - ensure that the law knows that you are not a random hooligan but "a climber in training"

I believe it is a specific offence to climb on a listed building. I was once acosted by the police when climbing on the highstreet face of Queen's college in Oxford. [context, at the hight of the animal right's protesters attacks on Oxford University]

"What were you doing up there?" asked the policeman
"climbing"
"But why were you"
"because it was there"
"errr... what?"

Apparently I could have got an £80 fine, but when they realised I was actually just climbing because I was a climber, rather than some drunken student showng off/animal right's protester trying to burn down the university they let me go on my way...

I know someone who was once buildering while dressed in drag in a wedding dress (it was a fancy dress party). The police turned up, and he explained in all seriousness that he was an expert and experience rock climber, so they should not be concerned...

Got booted out of exeter central station the other day - was waiting with a few mates before they went home, and started trying to climb up one of the platform's roof supports.

Out comes the station manager saying that "CCTV" has asked him to come down and send me on my way because I was "breaking railway bye-laws".

He seemed to be more concerned with asserting his own self-importance than actually giving me any kind of real punishment...

In Paris this year I was wlaking along with my family, and thought it would be funny to climb up the side of a building to hide from my 2 year old. Some very stern and grumpy armed policeman 'advised' me to get down and go away. I didn't know it was their parliament building...

Doesn't need to be mass public hysteria, just police over-reaction. This is what happened to me when they realised they couldn't make breaking and entering or drunk and disorderly stick.

It was some time ago.
