Having just brought my first rope I came across the term Redpoint in the handbook, this is one of many terms I was not familiar with. I have since found out what it referred to, but have had great fun on Google finding out what the above terms mean. I have never heard anyone use the terms at a wall or rock but have come across them in climbing magazines.
Please help as these don't:

In reply to Paul Leader:

Dogging is knobbing strangers at the bottom of a crag.

Frigging is what watching climbers do with their private bits.

And flashing is opening your long overcoat to reveal you have nothing on beneath....

In reply to Adam Moroz:

just as I thought. So the links were correct, and it has nought to do with climbing.

In reply to Paul Leader:

Flashing - climbing a route first attempt from bottom to top without any falls/rests/aid etc. May be onsight (without any prior knowledge other than guidebook info) or beta-flash (with some prior knowledge but not previous attempts).

Frigging/Dogging - Using aid, rests, falls, etc to attempt a route in various sections before finally making a clean ascent. Also called Working and is part of Redpointing a route (redpointing is the overall process of working then ascending cleanly).

In reply to Paul Leader: In the eighties there was also something called YO-YOing were climbers went up a bit came down, went up a bit more, came down, went up a... and so on till they got to the top. It sounds very time consuming and knackred, althoug better then hanging around in a harness and aching your legs and bollocks out.

In reply to Fiend:

Thanks for that Fiend, it did make me smile the answers Google brought up.

Must remember to add climbing to the search next time, it comes up with better results:

In reply to Adam Moroz: i meant knackering not knackred, sorry.

In reply to Paul Leader: they are all forms of cheating and other climbers will pride themselves in being better than you because they didn't.

In reply to Adam Moroz:

I come across a reference to Yo-Yoing before, wasn't it after a climber fell rather than carrying on, they came back all the way down and then climbed back up to their last protection?

Just imagine non climbers overhearing this conversation

Climber A "So how was your weekend at (Add crag name) mate?"

Climber B "Really great, I managed to flash everywhere. Unfortunately nearby there was a group of newbies dogging, and frigging all day. Tell you what though, there were some big cracks there, I managed to fistjam all the way up!!! Got my nuts in loads, it was really good, even managed to get a friend in as well..."

Climber A "Always the same with those newbies. They dog everywhere, and frig anything!!! Damn disgraceful, at least we show some sense of ethics, and flash everything onsight!! Can't beat a bit of fistjamming though can you. Much better than just using your fingers...."

In reply to Paul Leader:

Yes. Yo-yo = Fall, lower off all the way to the ground, rest and then reclimb from the bottom with the ropes still clipped through the protection. It's still an oft used practice today and some so-called 'ground-up' ascents are in fact yo-yo's. Very bad form on sport routes...

As a trivial point, the term Redpoint was coined by Kurt Albert who developed the pracise of painting little red circles at the base of 'projects' in the Frankenjura. When project was finally climbed clean with no rests or aid, the circle was painted in with a 'Rotpunkt' red dot - hence the name.

In reply to Allan Thomson:

As a newbie I feel I have done my fair share of Frigging , but I don't think I have ever dogged yet.
It's amazing - I've been doing these things without knowing it.
 Allan Thomson 02 Mar 2005
In reply to Paul Leader: I know the feeling, I seem to be spending too much time dogging and frigging, and not enough flashing......
 Dave Stelmach 03 Mar 2005
In reply to Paul Leader: Frigging is what's done in the rigging. Dogging is still illegal and flashing is applied to rooves to keep water out.
 LakesWinter 03 Mar 2005
In reply to Dave Stelmach: although flashing can also get you arrested in some circumstances

In reply to MattG:
and as sport climbing was invented in France, frigging should be called frogging not dogging!
