'Nice' as in pleasant, no G. That's how I learned it, how everyone else i know pronounces it and I deal with it frequently as a career volcanologist, so make of that what you will.

then that's definitely correct - the 'ei' and 'ie' sounds are pronounced with the second of the two letters in German -> ei = i, ie = e.

Well, instead of 'jee-ay' (how to spell that opening soft 'g' in phoney phonetics?), try just reading it through English-speaking eyes as 'gilet' (think 'kill it' with a hard 'g' instead of the 'k' to start)! Although sometimes I manage jee-ay (how to spell etc.) and sometimes just settle for 'insulated vest'...
