What's the correct pronounciation of "Gneiss"? "Nice" as in pleasant, "Nice" as in the place in the south of France, or something else?
 JTM 11 Jul 2011
In reply to Neil Adams:
Gnice... as in pleasant and with the G.
OP Neil Adams 11 Jul 2011
In reply to Neil Adams: So, two votes for "nice" as in pleasant, one with the G and one without. Thanks for those! Any advance on that?

Like Borat - iss naise.
 Dave Warburton 11 Jul 2011
In reply to Neil Adams: Pleasant with the g.
 stonemaster 11 Jul 2011
In reply to Neil Adams: Pleasant, no G...maybe that's why no one understands what one is trying to say...
OP Neil Adams 11 Jul 2011
In reply to Neil Adams: OK, thanks all. At least we've ruled out the 'south of France' version...
In reply to Neil Adams:

It's always in England been pronounced by geologists for 150 years as 'nice'.
 Hoppo 11 Jul 2011
In reply to Neil Adams:

I was just about to say I've always pronounced it as in niece, with a silent g
 Hoppo 11 Jul 2011
In reply to Hoppo:

But that's cause I've never heard anyone else say it!

In reply to Neil Adams: Nice, like pleasant, with as much hint of a g as knife has hint of a k, i.e. none.
 Franco Cookson 11 Jul 2011
In reply to Neil Adams:

People are just trying to troll you by saying you don't pronounce the 'g'. It's actually 'geese', like the bird.
 jadias 12 Jul 2011
In reply to Neil Adams:

'Nice' as in pleasant, no G. That's how I learned it, how everyone else i know pronounces it and I deal with it frequently as a career volcanologist, so make of that what you will.

i've been thoroughly confused about this ever since i lay eyes on gaillands....

do the french pronounce the G maybe?
Tobias at Home 12 Jul 2011
In reply to Tobias at Home: a quick google and...

http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=987308

"Yes the 'g' is pronounced and separately from the 'n'. It's not a gn like in 'agneau' or grignoter. It's a 'g' like in 'gare' followded by a 'n' and the rest is like in 'abesse'."

audio file (albeit not a great one) here: http://www.larousse.com/en/dictionaries/french/gneiss
 Toerag 12 Jul 2011
In reply to Neil Adams: definitely the 'pleasant' way - if it originates from German as per this explanation
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/gneiss
then that's definitely correct - the 'ei' and 'ie' sounds are pronounced with the second of the two letters in German -> ei = i, ie = e.
Tobias at Home 12 Jul 2011
In reply to john arran: cheers. although that makes it sound more like g-niss (to rhyme with miss) in french...

Of course they do. Otherwise it'd be Aillands...

Bit like the people who say the Goutier, or the Gran Paradisio.

You should hear me say 'gilet'! :-P

Ha, enlighten me Pete!
 petestack 13 Jul 2011
In reply to JTM:

Well, instead of 'jee-ay' (how to spell that opening soft 'g' in phoney phonetics?), try just reading it through English-speaking eyes as 'gilet' (think 'kill it' with a hard 'g' instead of the 'k' to start)! Although sometimes I manage jee-ay (how to spell etc.) and sometimes just settle for 'insulated vest'...
