According to the BBC a campaign has begun in Alan's home town of Northallerton in Yorkshire to get the moutaineer knighted for his achievments. On Thursday he became only the 13th person in history to climb all 14 peaks over 8,000m, fewer people than have stood on the moon.

i found this on planet fear

i can tell you the exact reason he hasn't been knighted. fantastic acheivment it is. but he is a miserable bugger of a yorkshireman. he hasn't publised him self the smae way ellen macarthur did. so no one out side of the climbing community really knew he was attempting it. so therefore he didn't have the whole nation praying for him like ellen. not nessarly a bad thing mind, i don't think that every little kid aspiring to be like alan is good thing at all. But that is why he hasn't been knighted. he is not a people person like bonnigton who used to publise he everest attempts and do climbs like corrination street on tv.

slight rant over.

And also, until last week he hadn't actually completed what
he set out to do...

Now he has.

I hope Planet Fear will swallow those words, because I think Mr Hinkes will shortly become Sir Alan...

The Appolo missions landed 12 on the moon.

That's just a stat that has since been superceded...

Lots of people will still quote Alan Hinkes was the 12th, whereas Ed Viesturs was, a couple of weeks ago (May 17th? - or very close)

So Alan is the 13th, and Ed was the 5th to do all 14 8000m+ summits without supplemtary oxygen...

In reply to imprisoned climber: Can't agree that he's a "miserable bugger of a yorkshireman". His image on film is a little dry, but he likes a good laugh. Why do you say he isn't a people person... Has he been rude to you? (come on dish some dirt) Bonnington was at the fore-front of the experimental BBC outside broadcasts at a time when the media wan't dominated by mass-"big brothering-celebrity-get my-cat-eaten" crap. It's also suprising how many people outside climbing circles think Brian Blessed is more significant to climbing than Sir Bonno and certainly don't know he's been knighted. Ellen MaCarthur has a hughe financial corporate machine driving the sponsorship of her sailing, hence a large amount of well organised publicity.

In reply to Dominion: Am I right in thinking it was Hinkes who features in Matt Dickinson's 'The Death Zone'? Dickinson (a journalist/writer) climbed Everest (as part of the expedition Brian Blessed was on) with Alan Hinkes; and he writes that Alan was suffering and that he was going a lot more strongly?

I haven't read Matt Dickinson's account, so can't comment.

In reply to Dave Halsted: who is brian bessesd? he is miserable bugger of yorkshire man i met him and he was. also have you noticed how trail magazine want to bum him lol.
Dave Halsted 05 Jun 2005
In reply to imprisoned climber: Brian Blessed... He's the guy with the beard and a Shakespearian voice. He tried to climb Everest 3 times and wrote 2 books....My mum likes him.
When you met Hinks, what did he do to annoy you so. I'm intrigued. Don't read Trail as it burnt my fingers.

In reply to imprisoned climber:

Brian Blessed was Edmund and Harry's father in the first series of Blackadder, also - I believe - was over the age of 60 when attempting to summit Everest with Hinkes...

Not really. Hinkes was guiding Dickenson, so it would have been irresponsible of him to have gone on too far ahead anyway. Dickenson did indeed summit a little ahead of Hinkes in the end, but here's what he actually wrote about the reasons (from page 207)

"I realise now that it was altitude sickness... which caused me to become concerned that he [Hinkes] had dropped out. The delay... which had seemed like an age, had in reality probably been only a few minutes while he sorted out his frozen goggles...

To my surprise, a few of Al's old rivals... called me at home to relish the details of how I had 'beaten' him to the top, but if they thought I was going to dish the dirt they were disappointed. Al arrived at the summitt in immaculate style and when he was there he was lucid enough to hold a long radio conversation with Brian... He also made sure he stayed with me all the way down to camp six, when I am sure he could have moved faster if he had chosen".

In reply to Norrie Muir: Now I'm confused. Certain who Brian Blessed is... But Leo?!? wasn't it Matt Dickinson.. Leo got to the top before Alan, but wasn't he balloon assisted....and as he overshot by a few hundred feet before crash landing I don't think it'd count as a summit ascent!

Knew what you meant, just amused me!

Dear Dave

You are confused, so who is Matt Dickinson then? I don't read mountaineering books or magazines, mind you sometimes I don't read all the posts in the threads. I wondered how Leo made it up, you solved it for me, it was Matt Dickenson. So, sorry about the mistaken identity.

In reply to Norrie Muir: On that note (Leo Dickinson)... There is a guy who deserves a knight-hood. His contribution to climbing lore is outstanding.

well that's different I suppose, the standard "let's knock hinkes" threads criticise him for being a self-publicist.

Could we compromise? Self-publicist but rubbish at it?

Fewer still have watched a match at all 92 league grounds in England and Wales. Should those who have also be knghted?

Only if they had a meat pie at each ground - roughly the equivalent level of risk to the 8,000's, I would have thought.

Brian Blessed was the bird man in the Flash Gordon movie (I think).
