I did the link up today (great day out!) have done it a few times in the past... and am yet to find a halfway decent route from the top of Cneifion to the base of Dolmen.

Any bright ideas??

Or is it just accepting that you will have to either head all the way down to Llyn Bochlwyd (sp?) And back up, or some grim Heather bashing interspersed with loose rock?

I just go East from the football pitch, dropping around 100m, over the False Griben and across to the small pond.

Ok thanks - so you're saying that there is a better way?  (Of sorts?!)

As above, down the scree path on the E side of Y Gribin (not the main walker's path on the crest) for 100m or so then look for a feasible way off to the right (as you descend) and then use the small pool as a marker.

You do still lose some height, but it's much better than going all the way down to Bochlwyd

Another option is to ascend y gribin then drop in from Bwlch y Ddwy Glyder.

Not as direct or quick as Jez's suggestion but worth knowing about

As you traverse round the Gribin, you should be able to follow your nose. You only have to drop down and leftish a short way until you can traverse right, aiming for the boulders to the right of Dolmen. If it gets difficult, you are too high. Just drop down and left a bit more and try again. There's actually something of a path if you can find it.

If you get it right, you hit the boulders without any re-ascent.

PS as an alternative to Dolmen you could try Hawk's Nest, East Gully Ridge or Chasm Face scrambles. They are all just a bit spicier!

You can do a detailed reconnaissance using Google maps 3D - most of Snowdonia/Eryri is done in proper 3D in the same way that most cities in the UK now are. The level of detail is absolutely stunning.

Note that you have to be very gentle with the movement controls or you'll find you've zoomed out by 20 miles etc. And if you move too much, it can take ages for the detailed "rendering" to sort itself out.

In all fact, the 3D models are better topos for any of the longer routes in the mountains than the guidebooks are. I’ve also used them to find the bottom of a route on Glyder Fach in a complete white out, rather than bailing to a different objective.

We did this last year to link up Cneifion Arete with Shark Buttress. It was easy enough to find the way TBH
