This is the non-working quarry near Trowbarrow.

It's huge but doesn't seem to have any climbing in it.

Is this because it would make Warton Main look solid?

And because Mick Fowler doesn't know about it

its a big hole alright; but featureless and would dull the spirit as a climbing location: it'd be up there with Horseshoe in that regard.

Love the music, it's inspired

Hadn't realised it was THAT big, couldn't be bothered to go over the railway, had just wondered about it after seeing it from afar and on the map.

There are many such holes in the ground...I sometimes find myself reflecting on their potential for climbing, irrespective of them being working or disused. One such is just outside Rugby: it can be seen from the West Coast mainline...not promising, but has lifted the spirit on those times early morning that I've been travelling north for work

I've seen that one too. Helps maintain my optimism that there is a secret crag X somewhere in the Midlands just waiting to be discovered.

Too many false dawns in that regard: Barrow Hill Quarry was one such

It looks like modern quarrying techniques will reduce the possibility of newly abandoned quarries being much good to climbers. The approach is too uniform, and the tiering doesn't lend itself to continuous pieces of rock.

The big quarry over at Holmepark, by Hutton Roof, looks like it has some old sections that might offer something if it's ever abandoned, but I've never been in.

In reply to Neil Henson: there is, in Leicestershire, other side of the road from Groby pool.

Unfortunately I think it's still being worked but the face nearest the road (facing away from and difficult to see) was quarried ages ago and can't be quarried any more (too near the road). It's got features like corners and may have been blasted in the days before explosives were so rock shattering.

And what was wrong with BHQ

I must have been there at least once, the A1 was ok but the "VS" was a bit interesting. All this before the water level rose.

Too many projectiles incoming from locals for my liking...
