What can I put on midge bites to stop them itching? They are driving me maaaaaaaaad!

In reply to Naomi:
I think there's a couple of threads lurking about regarding this. But if it's any consolation, I had a blimmin allergic reaction to the bites last time. Had to go to the Docs where he gave me a steroid injection, some steroid cream and some tablets of which I had to take 8 a day for a week. Oh and I had to sleep in the spare room until I stopped 'bursting' every time I rolled over :~(

Me!

In reply to Naomi: We've done this before, as I remember the best course of action was to smother them in cats piss, or something like that!

In reply to Naomi:

eerrrrrr my saliva seems to work quite well. On me anyway

Honest - try it. I think it's sommat to do with the old acid / alkaline neutralizing eachother thingy.

In reply to FatBoy:
And take some antihistimines - I find Loratadine works best for me when in midge-bite scratching frenzy....
Al Evans 18 Sep 2001
In reply to TN: Cat piss is cheaper

In reply to Al Evans:

but smellier!

Do all climbers have a wee-obsession. When my hands hurt I was told to rinse them in my own - now you want someone to walk round covered in cat wee!?! Nice!

In reply to Naomi:
Best with calamine lotion (chemists / boots etc)
or an antihistamine cream.

In reply to Naomi: Tiger Balm, it's awesome at inscet bites and smells great. Really cheep in Thailand too, so there's a good excuse to head out there if ever there was one. Some health shop may stock it too.
In reply to Naomi: Lanacane seems to work.

In reply to Naomi:

zirtek antihistimine. wont send you to sleep like piriton. the best repellent is something with deet in it!
OP Ladyboy 18 Sep 2001
In reply to Naomi: No seriously a liberal appilication of Adam Hocking has always done wonders for my bites. I must ssay hes a bit reluctant when it comes to nights out though.
 london_huddy 18 Sep 2001
once bitten, there's not a lot to do. lifesystem's expedition plus gel's the best i've found. repelent, and the gel stops the little buggers sinking teeth in if they do land on you. probably cheeper than an application of Mr. Hocking too
Naomi 19 Sep 2001
In reply to Naomi: Thanks for the advice everyone. Now does anyone want to tell me how you go about draining a cat? Or let me know where you can buy bottled cat piss?

Mr Hocking - how exactly do *you* stop the bites itching? I'm v curious!

Bob 19 Sep 2001
In reply to Naomi:

Plain ordinary vinegar. Midge bites are alkaline so the acid in the vinegar helps neutralise it. If you are allergic to the bites then antihistamine cream will help.

Alternatively try Paul!

In reply to Naomi: Pick cat up, run thumb from mid to between back legs, repair hands from multitude of scratches. Cat will also wait and get its own back . At least ours did, after vet visit. Shat on bed.
jude calvert-toulmin 19 Sep 2001
In reply to Naomi: Order some Avon "Skin so soft" body oil spray from the Avon website. It is a world-famous midge repellent, ask Jo from Scotland, she knows about these things. I've bought some and bought some for my buds too because it is meant to be so good.
Naomi 19 Sep 2001
In reply to jude calvert-toulmin: Will try the cat thing later!

Avon SSS doesn't work either - just makes the little bleeders stick to you. Also the scent clashes with the Gucci - can't have that can we dahhhling!?

mwah mwah

In reply to Naomi: Nooooo, don't do it unless your trained in said technique. Its too much indiginity for a cat to bear, you should have seen our cat after he had his anal glands dealt with, couldn't look us in the eyes for weeks. Never thought I'd see a cat blush.
Naomi 19 Sep 2001
In reply to AndrewB: Our cat had to have his glands done so I know exactly what you mean. It's that look they get in their eyes when the vet starts to squeeze - sheer blind hatred. Unfortunately anal glands have got nothing to do with harvesting cat pee, so I'll stop there.
Naomi 19 Sep 2001
In reply to Naomi: They've started itching again - pass me a cat! Or send Adam Hocking round! Quick!

In reply to Naomi:

I don't know why this works, but if you aim a hot hairdryer at the bites when they start to itch, it's nearly as good as scratching.

An oatmeal bath is also good. Tie the oats up in a hanky before you stick them in the bath though or you'll be floating in porridge.
