Does anyone know who the eponymous Nikki is (or was)? Was (s)he the first ascentionist (/descentionist) of this problem?

For anyone who doesn't know, Nikki's Leap is the 'compelling, for some' 80' leap into the lake at the bottom of the Vivian Quarry.

In reply to john: Dont know who Nikki is/was, but my late freind Kath did this a couple of years ago, she was a swimming instructor and should have known better, anyway she did it and had to sit on a rubber ring for a few weeks after!

In reply to Stu: I think it says in the old llanberis guide, cant remember now though. I once had this great idea for an advertising photo featuring Nikki's leap. Used to have this mega obedient collie called Bryn. I was gonna get a load of cameras set up and chuck a Bonio off the edge of the leap. " Fetch Bryn". The caption was to be "He'll do anything for a Bonio". I reckon it was a sure fire winner, I could imagine the film rights etc! Loadsamoney. Unfortunately wife wouldnt let me do it!! ( Bryn would have loved it)

Apparently it hurts less if you drop a big rock below you as you jump. Wouldnt want to get it wrong though!

In reply to steveont know how relevant this is , but there was a certain N Walton doing a lot on slate at the time, can anybody shed any light on this????
Bob 31 May 2001
In reply to Al Evans:

That would be Nick Walton, so wrong sex unfortunately as Nikki was definitely female.

In reply to john:

Well, its a bloody long way down. As we both now know John!

Anyway... shhh, there might be some people of authority round here that wouldnt approve!

In reply to john: Some years ago while drunk + stoned in a cottage outside Llanberis I was introduced to someone with the words that his girlfriend was the Nikki who did Nikki's leap, so she definitely did exist. Unfortunately due to my state at the time I can't remember who he was.
John2 31 May 2001
In reply to John2: Now that I come to think of it, he also assured me that she had 'big balls for a woman'. An interesting concept.

In reply to john:

You'll be meaning Nikki Wright then.... ex Llanberis and North Wales babe.
john 04 Jun 2001
In reply to Phil Kelly:

Excellent - thanks. Has to be the most significant first ascent by a woman in UK climbing! Was she a climber, then?

On a similar point, someone told me last night that Berry Head had been jumped. Is this true?? Must be 300'. Surely not.......

In reply to john: The arch at Hodge Close has, hasn't it? The story was it was an Aussie stuntman who had air cylinders in the water to make it all bubbly and soft. That's got to be 180'.

In reply to john:

Aye, Nikki did her fair share of climbing. I've got some shots of her following Necronomicon in Verdon about 12 years ago, after my wife led it.

She also used to hang around in Yorkshire and Lancashire.

In reply to Phil Kelly:

Aye Lancs is a good place to hang out!

In reply to Phil Kelly:

I know someone that jumped of hodge close and ripped there feet to shreads, but, still survived

In reply to Adam Lincoln:

Adam

You're right - unfortunately I just don't get the opportunity any more!

Hope she didn't try and jump that!
Al Evans 04 Jun 2001
In reply to john: There was a big thing about jumping at the time, somebody did the ledge on Castel Helen I seem to remember. These days its called deep water soloing and is far more commendable!
Bob 04 Jun 2001
In reply to andy:

Don't know about a stuntman. I was at Hodge once with an Aussie who was just going to jump it until I persuaded him out of the idea.

Sorry, guys - it was Nikki Thomas... John Sylvester's wife.

I messed up, and I apologise.
