I have no idea of the issues here but am sure this radio prog will be worth listening to http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01s0qnm I did not know whether to put this is Rocktalk or the hillwalking section, probably suitable for both.

The whole area has a history of mining: alum on the coast just north of Ravenscar; iron ore in Rosedale. A classic case of development vs conservation, I'm not sure which will win.
