Hello

I would like to go bouldering to Stanage Plantation, but I have no car. Anyone know what's the best way (the nearest drop off) to go using public transport?

Thanks!

In reply to David Aran: Where are you coming from? I'll assume Sheffield.

You'll have a bit of a walk in any case as there isn't any direct pub transport, apart from a bus that runs on sundays http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/stanagebus
But I've never used it so can't comment.

At any other time you're looking at walking from either Hathersage or along Burbage from Fox House. Both don't take long if you just get on with it. For Hathersage you either take the train or get the 272 Bus. For Fox House it's also the 272.

If you don't fancy the bother you could check out Burbage South boulders, which are 5 mins walk from Fox house and are maybe the most concentrated set of problems in eastern peak?

In reply to Atticus Finch:
As a slightly obscure alternative, you could also walk over from Redmires.

On weekdays there's an early morning 51 bus that goes all the way out to Wyming Brook (most stop at Lodge Moor). From there its a fairly pleasant 2 1/2 mile walk over to Stanage via Stanage Pole.

If from sheffield, stick your thumb out somewhere near Ecclesall Road/Brocco Bank roundabout, if you look vaguely like a climber you'll get a lift soon enough at a weekend at least.

Pleasant walk from both approaches too.

Big hill up from Hathersage tho

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, I'm in Sheffield, I forgot write it.

I think I will try from Fox House. Any walking time estimation? 30 min, 1 hour?

In reply to David Aran: # 51 (goes through Broomhill) into redmires is much more regular and a lot cheaper than the 272. Walk from Redmires to plantation is about 40 minutes, it's much further to go to Plantation from Fox House, possibly twice as far.

In reply to David Aran:

Fox House to Stanage Plantation (via Burbage South, Higgar Tor and Stanage Pop is about 3.5 miles. It will be a 'good' hour, plus a bit.

In reply to steve456: Why did I not know that... that's so much more convenient for me. How far up redmires does it go?

Cheers

In reply to Atticus Finch:

To a layby just past the old Lodge Moor hospital clocktower.

It's a tad over 3 miles from there to the Edge.

In reply to David Aran:

Do you have a bike?

The ride hrough lodge moor to the pole then down the causeway is an excellent way to the crag. I did that a lot when in sheffield, back then we didnt carry mattresses to the boulders though, might catch the wnd a bit

Because you didn't read my post, 3rd in the thread?

It goes to Lodge Moor except for one bus first thing each weekday morning that goes all the way out to Wyming Brook (almost a mile further along).

In reply to 3leggeddog: I had a bike, but someone stole it just 1 day after buying it, lucky me.
