Does anyone know where I can watch/stream/download free climbing films? Don't know if torrents are allowed to be mentioned on here? Any websites/help/ideas?

renting them from here seems a good bet http://www.steepedge.com/

In reply to yorkshiresherpa:

videoclimb.com trawls the internet for the best free climbing movies and then hosts them all in one place. Not a bad bet. But obviously they are the free ones so don't expect dosage quality

Dont pirate climbing movies, it's one of the few ways pro climbers can actually make any money. Pirating hollywood movies is like stealing from tescos, pirating climbing movies is like stealing from your local corner shop. However, It's up to you to make you're own morality
In reply to Kemics: Couldn't agree more Sherpa.

In reply to freeclimbfreemind: Ok firstly course I've heard of YouTube, I've not been living in a cave for the last ten years so if you're gonna get clever don't post on my thread. Secondly I have no intention of downloading illegally I was just saying that because I didn't want someone to mention that method and then the thread get removed as I know some forums do if you promote illegal activity.
Lastly I am not a cheapskate. I own plenty of climbing films and fully support all pros climbers with regards to their income. But £20 a DVD still seems a little steep IMO especially if you don't know what you're getting quality wise. Anyway I made the post to see if there was anything new online worth looking at to pass a Sunday afternoon. I will give the rental websites a look.

Have you seen all the vids on here, friday night vids usually

In reply to yorkshiresherpa:

If you have already got plenty of climbing films you could try and swap on UKC? especially if you have a particular title in mind.
In reply to funsized: That steepedge site is just what I was after. £3 to rent and if you like it the price to buy it ain't too bad plus they got all the main ones and loads more. That's my Sunday sorted.

That's a bit unreasonable as your options are greatly limited if you only buy and also suggests your lack of desire to watch such footage in the first place. Bellend!

Sherpa - Try Vimeo and as mentioned Youtube. There are plenty of blogs (personal and manufacturers) worth checking out if you look around.

As for Torrents, I use a try before I buy method. If I like it I'll buy it anyway. If not i delete it. You get to try cars, shoes, harnesses etc etc, so why not vids and music.
mountainsheep 22 May 2011
In reply to Fishmate: Slightly unreasonable you calling me a bell end when all I said was to buy it rather than downloading a copy off of the Internet which detracts from climbing film industry, climbers and film makers. Why does it mean that I have a lack of desire to watch films if I am willing to pay for them? Yes there are free clips and videos of climbing all over the Internet but by films I took it to mean stuff like onsight, asgaurd project etc. which are not cheap to make in the first place and won't be continued to be made if people are downloading them for free off the Internet.

OK, you called the OP a cheapskate. This provoked my reaction, i.e. your ignorant comment. Not everyone has money to purchase the videos you mention. Is education only for those with coin? Your posts suggest that this should be the case, so yes, if you stand by this you are a bellend, I could go on. Probably no point given your heavily institutionalised attitude.

I do agree, that those who make should take, i.e. get their work paid for, however as you would have read in my first post on this thread, I advocate purchase after try before buy and deletion of work if product isn't what you want.

I think you are guilty of what you accuse. Abuse with no back up. Try and be an adult and not let your emotions cloud reason.

If you think the entertainment market should be different from any other market then please educate me. I love to learn about that which I don't already know, so have a go and change my mind but don't abuse me when you wouldn't face to face.

In reply to Fishmate: I do understand that some people don't have the disposable income to spend £20 a pop on climbing DVDs but they aren't exactly essential and nicking it off bit torrent or lime wire is not on. Try before you buy for films tends to be a trailer rather than down loading it and watching it first, and if you do enjoy it what's the incentive to delete it and buy the real thing when've already seen it and have a copy? I think it's fine if people do that then buy it but the majority won't. Those sites where you can rent them look like just the trick and will have to try it out.
 Fishmate 22 May 2011
In reply to mountainsheep:

We all live to our own principles and I'm not responsible for others. I respect your choice, but relying on trailers can be like trusting politicians. A trailer can say a lot but also inflate the overall quality of a product. I'm sure you know this?

Another good thing about Torrent d/ling is that it promotes word of mouth very well. I have d/l stuff I deleted because it wasn't to my taste but told friends who might like it. Sometimes they check it out and buy the product. It cuts both ways.

Hijacking the thread but does anyone know if 5 islands is available anywhere. BBC say its no longer available to stream. I think the law in cases like this is that you can download and share it for free until it is available to purchase on dvd.

Swapping on UKC is a great idea
Feel free to email me if you fancy swapping onsight, The Gresham Technique DVDs or a copy of Rock Athlete for something.

" Is education only for those with coin? "

Is a free (well ok free to the user) education REALLY the same as free climbing films?

mountainsheep 23 May 2011
In reply to James Oswald: I'm confused, what?
 Fishmate 23 May 2011
In reply to James Oswald:

I would say so James, however if you take me word for word and utmost literally then perhaps not. I like to see talented people doing things I dream of, however I generally watch climbing films and videos to observe technique and learn from them, so my answer is YES
