I just saw a couple of posters up at Huddersfield wall advertising these, both in late Feb.

£7 each? Hot dog! I paid £25 for a climbing lesson with Johnny last year that I got practically nothing out of (though my friends enjoyed themselves) but this is what I really wanted. I love Stone Monkey and Johnny has a way with words that rivals his climbing ability.

And Dave MacLeod too! Granted E11 is one of the worst climbing films I've seen (which is of course not his fault but rather that of the film-makers) But he seems like a very nice bloke, and is obviously a superb climber.

Lesson shmesson, sign me up for some lectures; I want to hear what these guys have to say about climbing.

P.S. Anyone know the latest on Johnny's supposedly forthcoming book?

ooo, are these talks both in Huddersfield? I didn't notice a poster last time I was down the wall.

In reply to CJD: It's Huddersfield Uni club organising them. They seem to have more details of these plus Al Hinkes on this page http://mountaineering.hud.ac.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=40

In reply to CJD: Talks are both in CragRats theatre in Holmfirth

In reply to Liam M:

you have to be logged in to view the forum, and the news/events page isn't very detailed.

bah. I'll have a look next time I'm in.
Clean 23 Jan 2007
In reply to Liam M: Cheers for the link, seems I got my dates wrong. Following the mountaineeringlectures.com link on there I found out they're actually in March and April. Definitely still going
 CJD 23 Jan 2007
In reply to Clean:

that link's a bit confusing - the front page says they're in feb then the 'more info' pages say they're in march and april.

hmm.
 Liam M 23 Jan 2007
In reply to CJD: That's weird - when I click on the forum page I linked it says 'you are not logged in' in the corner so it seems strange that you can't access it, but anyway.

The dates are:
Alan Hinkes Lecture - 'Tales From The Top'. - (Mountaineering Lectures Launch!)
Wednesday 21st February - £8 adv / £9.50 on the door.

Johnny Dawes Lecture -'Stone Monkey: Portrait of a rock climber' + 'The Story of Indian Face' film screening.
Thursday 22nd March 2007 - £7 adv/ £8.50 on the door.

Dave MacLeod Lecture + E11 Screening
Thursday 19 April 2007 - £7 adv/ £8.50 on the door.

Hi Guys/ Gals,

Glad to see their is such interest in the lectures.

I am launching the website with a set of lectures in Holmfirth. Alan, Johnny and Dave are all supporting us, so hopefully we'll offer some interesting 'show's for your folks in the Holmfirth area. Really exciting times, lots of things going on. Sorry for the above confusion regarding the dates CJD, problems are now rectified.

A whole bunch of people have emailed me regarding what, where and when so to clarify:

Alan Hinkes: 21st Feb 07
Johnny Dawes: 22nd March 07
Dave MacLeod: 19th April 07.

More details can be found online at www.mountaineeringlectures.co.uk/events.htm

Hope to see you there.

Cheers.

Your standards are obviously much higher than mine.
(I was watching it earlier tonight.)
I think it's absolutely brilliant.

A love affair, with climbing, with life.

In reply to Mick Ward:

You didn't mind the tw*t rapper?
The poor quality of both picture and sound?
The shonky editing?
The student film feel to the whole thing?
The many, many, parallels with Stone Monkey?
The laughably bad music throughout?
The young girl attempting to kill a dog by feeding it a tin can?

Really?
 johnl 24 Jan 2007
In reply to Clean: They all gave it life. I hate stuff that is over produced.

In reply to Clean:

It ain't slick. Dumby ain't slick. Dave ain't slick. Rhapsody ain't slick. You want slick... go elsewhere.

In reply to Clean:
isnt dave macleod giving his lecture at Manchester Climbing centre around that time ?
Mountaineering Lectures 24 Jan 2007
In reply to CJD:

I'm glad you approve! Are you going to come along?
Clean 24 Jan 2007
In reply to pinkie: Sorry pinkie, all I know is that I saw posters advertising these specific lectures.

As for the E11 debate, Stone Monkey, Best Forgotten Art & Hard Grit aren't slick or over produced. But they are very good films

In reply to Mountaineering Lectures:

Just been on the website. Looks V cool! Really like the Blog!
Clean 27 Jan 2007
In reply to Mountaineering Lectures:

I guess this is kinda redundant now, but phoning the Cragrats theatre confirms that the dates on the posters are correct:

Johnny Dawes lecture on the 22nd of March
Dave MacLeod lecture on the 19th of April

See you there.

P.S. No-one has any info on the book Johnny is supposed to be working on? I never get tired of his Whisky-coloured water and dormitory of climbs poem, but as a big reader I'm hungry for an entire book of his eloquence

In reply to Liam M:

Hi all,

Huddersfield Uni Mountaineering Club is not actually putting on these lectures although Tristan, of Mountaineering Lectures was involved in organising some of them with the club last year and an excellent job he did. I am sure these lectures will be as professionally done as the last ones and the Cragrats Theatre looks to be an excellent venue.

Huddersfield Uni are putting on a lecture this year however. We've got Ed Drummond coming on the 21st March, to give us an evening of life and climbing based poetry. Should be interesting and certainly a bit different from your usual fayre. Tickets are going to be £5 on the door I think.

I would be great to see these all events well supported (they certainly were last year); the more support, the more chance of them becoming regular fixtures. It certainly nice not to have to yard it down to Sheffield to see folk.

Hey guys,

A quick note to let you all know that the Alan Hinkes tickets are selling VERY fast now!

Please note the Huddersfield Examiner's report that Johnny Dawes lecture is on the 22nd February is wrong. The lecture is still on Thursday 22nd March at 7pm. You can get tickets for all events from CragRats Theatre on 01484 691323.

Cheers

Cheers man, really looking forward to it. Be seein you at the lecture?

Hey Tristan, nice job mate. I can't believe you're only asking £7 for each lecture. Have bookmarked your website to keep track of future events. Even though I'm too much of a fair-weather hiker and climber to ever do any real mountaineering, I reckon I might end up at the Alan Hinkes evening after all.

Ever bouldered at the mini-crag above Holmfirth? Some nice problems up there. Sketchy top-outs too, all good practice though
Tristan 01 Feb 2007
In reply to Clean:

Yes. It's Holmfirth Edge. Some narly top outs and some very sharp Rocks. It would be good to see you at the Alan Hinkes lecture. You can get the tickets at the theatre on 01484 691323.
Tristan 05 Feb 2007
In reply to Clean:

For anyone wishing to get advance tickets for the Alan Hinkes lecture please note that there are only about 20 tickets left. They can be bought at the CragRats Theatre or via their ticket line on 01484 691323.
