A foothold on the classic Berlins Fallen was enhanced earlier this year.

Unfortunately this is not an isolated incident, recently more holds on this same problem have since been modified. One hold has been completely smashed off before the break. Sadly other routes in the vicinity, including the classic meat hooks problem, are being subjected to the same treatment.

I am baffled as to why this is happening or even why someone would want to continue doing this.

Maybe there is someone out there that can help explain.

Is this happening at any other locations?

How high off the ground are the affected holds, Mike?

Hard to know what to do about this, other than alert climbers on threads, which you've done. Thanks again for posting.

Do you think it is climbers doing this? Smashing off holds doesn't sound too clever ...

I've seen and heard of people climbing there when its been damp which is definitely a bad thing for hold erosion.

I've also noticed the starting hold of Free Bandits has drastically improved in recent years. We put it down to people going at it too hard with a brush.

BTW Meat Hooks is my all time favourite problem at Nesscliffe. Haven't managed to complete the final 2 moves of Berlin's in the past but I think I'm finally strong and fit enough now. I hope it hasn't changed the problem too much

The recent damage is of a certain nature suggesting that the perpetrator (s) have either a lack of, or a very limited climbing knowledge.

Some wear and tear, which could be considered longer term damage is definitely caused by enthusiastic climbers and abseiling groups, dirty sandy boots, excessive cleaning etc.
