Are there any hillrunning shoes that work for very wide feet. It's not for me, but for my OH who can't seem to find any that fit. He has always used Walshes but had to buy several sizes bigger to accommodate his wide feet, but it's not ideal. Innovates are too narrow, too. Any suggestions?

Salomon? Generally a bit 'softer' though so may not suit him but they definitely seem wider across the toes than the others I've tried.

In reply to Heike:

Has he tried Walsh Ultra? Mine are actually a bit too wide (or at least have too much forefoot volume). I think this might be more or less the only option in a proper fell shoe. The estimable Dr. R will be along in a moment with further advice.

In reply to Heike:
Aside from Walsh Ultras - the wider versions, which I assume you mean your OH has tried; New Balance do extra wide fits.

In reply to Heike:

A half size larger in Inov-8 does me and I have square feet - they do require a bit of wearing in though. Other than that try U.S. shoes - Montrail and Brooks both fit me perfectly in their respective U.K. sizing.

Not in a fell shoe they don't. In fact I don't think they do a walsh-substitute of any sort now. If you can still find an old-style RX Terrain in the wider fitting this would work, but there are very (very) unlikely to be any around now, I think.
In reply to Removed User:

The 840 should come in two widths and it's a fine shoe... well it was in last years RAB (3rd place mixed) and various other MM/long distance events.

Just one width (D), I think. It does look good, though. If we are going to allow shoes with a bit of a heel then Mizuno Wave Harriers work for me.

In reply to Heike:

I've got fairly broad forefeet, and the inov8 flyroc fits really well (though is a bit loose on the heel for traversing), and I've not had any significant pinching in mudclaw 330s, which is helped by the lacing system. I take a size 10 Salomon trail shoe, but 9.5 is fine in inov8.

In reply to Removed User: Yeah mizuno wave harriers (more of a traily fell shoe but suffice), montrail highlanders, or walsh ultras seem the main options.

Supposedly innov 8 are bringing out a broad fitting shoe soon.

In reply to Dauphin: cheers, he tried inov8 and Montrail and they didn't fit. I don't think he has tried Brooks.

Thanks, I'll ask whether he has tried the walsh ultras, he tried on some of the montrail ones at the weekend and they were too narrow.

In reply to Heike:

Thanks everyone for your suggestions,
the Mizuno, the NB 840 and Salomon are some that he hasn't tried. We'll see - or he'll just have to continue to trash his feet in the Walshes! He usually now takes a pair of Walshes and road trainers and puts them on when the terrain is not too bad.

When you say Walshes, are these the boat-like Walsh Ultras (either of the two version at the bottom of this page: www.peteblandsports.co.uk/trolleyed/2/3/70/94/. If these aren't wide enough, I suggest surgery.

I shall pass that on - where do you suggest I should chop him off from - just below the head?

Hi,

The best thing to do is to get to a good running shop where they can do a gait analysis. If your in the Sheffield area try

They have quite a good website and offer sound advice.

In reply to Heike: I wish you hadn't asked this question. I have struggled for years to find a fell shoe wide/square toed enough to remotely fit me, so far to no avail. But if there really is one out there (yet to be convinced) then bang goes my main excuse for not running.
In reply to NicholasH:

A gait analysis for fell running shoes would be largely irrelevant as the surface you are running on is far from flat and so your gait is all over.

Hi Heike,Wa

I'm no fell runner, but I like to wear fell running shoes for approaching climbs. (they're nice and light and super grippy on wet grass.)

I've got fat feet and really struggled to find shoes wide enough, but the following shoes have fitted me well.

Muzino wave harriers.
Montrail something or others
Walshes, but no the ordinary PB ones the PB Ultras, which have a much wider fit.

Don't know if you're still looking, but the Walsh Ultra's really are quite wide - I've had a few nasty blisters from the heels moving about descending and contouring. The lacing is over quite a short length, so hard to cinch down. I like Wave Harriers, but they do have a bit of structure that comes in from the toe and stops them stretching.

Don't write off Inov-8 completely - check whether a particular shoe is 'Endurance' (wider) or 'Performance' last. Shame all the recent racier models are the latter. I like Roclite 295s for an allrounder that don't mind a stretch of road.

I've started getting blisters from Ultra's..maybe they've changed their shoe last..Inov8 keep talking about bringing out a proper wide fitting shoe.

In reply to Heike:

I have wide feet and ended up with a pair of Salomon shoes for running, but that said there was a huge difference in width on the various Salomon shoes i tried, so if the first pair tried doesnt fit dont give up on them just because of that, try different models.

In reply to Heike:

I'd second Salomon as, for a scrawny wee thing, i have the fattest feet and have always found it difficult to find shoes that are non squishy and was chuffed when, after buying my salomons, they were comfy from the offset. They've been up bens with me ,up on hill, out on crag, had them for a handful of years noo so, very durable

In reply to IainRUK: Roclite 295 are essentially the Roclite sole with the Flyroc last which work really well for people with wide feet like myself.

My only criticism with them is that I've managed to rip the laces completely out of the lacing system twice now. They are good shoes but from my point of view fundamentally flawed.

Like others have said PB Ultras are worth a look and this is probably what I'm going to go for.

If you can still get hold of a pair of Montrail Highlanders these were bullet proof fell shoes with a reasonably wide last.

In reply to Heike: Adidas Swoops are good for wide feet.
