I never really knew much of the man, but knew the name. The Guardian (?) have posted this 16minute tribute to him - typically understated but I enjoyed it. Especially the Ford Escort.

While Frank covered the additional 462 miles - including many of Britain's most treacherous roads - at an average of 64mph.

How times change!

Not only would this no longer be anywhere near possible, also it would widely be seen as completely irresponsible! Whereas at the time it was respected and applauded.

In reply to DizzyT: Yeah a bit like the self righteousness of speeding drivers😏 And folk that want to turn a thread about an iconic character into a tale of their deeds.

If you read my (generally uncritical) observation as a comment on suspicion of authority, I fear you badly missed the point.

Joss was gentle man who inspired many people. The fells are a bit sadder without his smile.

Joss Naylor set a benchmark many of us would aspire to. You’ve just made a fool of yourself.

FWIW I used to drive like an arse, three figure speeds on highland roads, sub 2hours Edinburgh to Glencoe etc. Just because I got away with it doesn’t mean I wasn’t a prick. I’m not proud of it.

I hope you grow up before someone else suffers the consequences of your ignorance.

A rally prepped Ford, wow.  Impressive documentary , thanks for posting that.

In reply to Jack Frost:

The date of 1971 is significant - that was the year the M6 reached Carlisle to join up with the A74 dual carriageway so it was a clear run south all the way from Glasgow to the lakes.

(IIRC it was actually a Capri but close enough for artistic licence I guess! And Frank was genuinely a rally driver in addition to all the other stuff he managed to do on the quiet when he wasn't running the shop...)

The footage definitely shows a Mk1 Escort.

I know but that's a reconstruction, they didn't have a camera car following behind in 1971 🙂 in real life it was a Capri.

The protagonists. Borrowed from an article on The Climber Shop website.

Just got round to watching this short documentary.

He says that it's all "no great shaker"; I say: "bloody hell - what an outstanding athlete !"

Encourage all to take a look before the Guardian takes it off their website.
