Podiatrist advice?

Hi,

Sorry. I periodically come on here to ask for advice how I can keep running on my arthritic ankle.

About 15y ago I fell and ruptured by lateral collateral ankle ligs. Last few years, due to some instability, my talus bone has slightly rotated in a supination direction. I think that's how you'd describe it. And moderate arthritis is occuring.

Been to docter. Had xrays. Chatted to an ankle surgeon.

Been put on naproxen to use occasionally which helps. Told to keep running is ok but probably 10y time may need surgery. Replacement rather than fusion.

So.....when I run, things go ok until I spend any time where my bad ankle has to be placed in slight supination. Then my lateral collat ligament what's left starts to ache.

????Would an orthotic that puts this foot in pronation help???? I find I look to place my foot onto the ground so that this occurs anyway.

I know this would be bad for other parts of my foot...But it comes down to making the best of a bad job.

I intend to keep running. Run a lot of 10m stints and up. Very slow and ploddy but addicted I guess.

Hope I haven't bored people to tears.

Cheers,

Roger.

Definitely worth a consultation with a podiatrist who could do a good biomechanical analysis.....one of my kids had a good assessment done and had an insole which corrected their ankle/knee/hip alignment and was a real game changer for them!

In reply to im off: hi - I'm a bit confused by what you mean that you deliberately put tthe foot in a mild supination?  You land on the inside of the foot and roll outwards?

Do you normally run on or off road, do you wear a neutral shoe or ... ?

Sorry, I try to place it in a pronated position. I got mixed up. The way that makes sense. I try not to roll in or out. It's a very tentative minimal movement of joint sort of placement. It don't look pretty.

I mainly do off road, trails, fell, through winter on road.

Normally wear a pronators shoe. I over pronate too but this is the lesser problem now

Suppose I could try a neutral shoe on the bad foot.

Think I'll spend the cash and see podiatrist esp if can make big difference.

Definitely recommend booking into see a podiatrist that can assess (biomechanical assessment) your feet, gait, ankles, calves, legs and shape insoles for you to help. I work alongside one and see the benefits on a daily basis to all of her clients.

My wife is a podiatrist (although not a musculoskeletal (MSK) specialist).

Her advice is to seek out an MSK specialist, preferably one that deals with runners/athletes. Failure to do so could be building up problems for the future that become harder to resolve.
