What would be your thoughts on using a snowboarding helmet while climbing?

I know it may not really be the correct form of protection, but until I rustle up the cash to buy a new one, I am assuming that my trusty snowboard lid will be better than nowt.

or am i just wasting my time?

its gonna be a lot better than nothing.

one of the main differences in spec is that climbing helmets are designed to have sharp lumps of rock fall ON them, whereas a boarding lid will be mainly designed for when YOU fall over.

For normal cragging that won't matter too much, for the alps it might.

other than that it will be wieght/ comfort/ too hot issues.

It'll be better than nothing but you'll sweat to death in the summer.
A boarding helmet will protect you better when falling but as a previous poster said may not be tested for pointy rocks falling on your head.
It could be good for winter climbing.

In reply to gethin_allen: I think summer or winter you will sweat to death, even if it has removable ear flaps.

In reply to Chris F:

Hmm, I think you all have a good point, it was comfortable in winter, but I will most likely be just roasting in the summer months.

back to the drawing board.

How old is your snowboarding helmet? If it needs replacing soon, kill two birds and get one of these?

Got no personal experience of them but seems interesting - though they'd still be too hot in summer

I agree with Dan Arkle though, each helmet is designed for different things.

Much better protection than nothing. Probably gives very good protection in a fall.

It'll surely be too hot this time of year though wont it.

In reply to Nee: I quite playing the helmet game several years ago. I use my skateboard helmet for ice climbing, rock climbing, snowboarding, skiing and would use it for skateboarding if I had one. It fits great, looks kool (major bonus) covers what needs covering. You can't take climbing helmets seriously after petzel came out with that piece of crap foam thing that floats around on the top of your head. I have heard the sales pitches given to kids parents about the diffrence between a ski helmet and a snowboarding helmet and why they need to have both.

In reply to Nee: I left my helemt at home on a cairngorm trip last yr and hired a snowboard helmet in aviemore. was great, no need for a hat underneath and very comfy in the cold. Plenty strong enough.

In reply to Nee: you wont be able to look up whilst next to the rock.

In reply to Nee:
it may be in the standards for a climbing helmet chin strap that it is designed to open above a certain force, so that if you fall and the helmet snags you dont get hung up by it. I dont know that its just food for thought.

Better than nowt, must be!

Remember, if you have a 10 quid head, get a 10 quid helmet!
