Hi all,

I’m training to become a Mountaineering instructor (MCI) and as such am looking for folk who would be keen to help me practice. We could have a go at any aspect of trad climbing, scrambling or navigating in the hills.

I need to stress that as an MCI trainee I do not, as yet, hold the Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor Award  (MCI) which is the recognised qualification for the instruction of scrambling and multi-pitch rock climbing in the UK.  I've undergone the training course, but training for an award does not constitute a qualification.

I do not hold insurance that allows me to receive payment or benefits in kind for instruction, but as a volunteer with membership of a mountaineering council of the UK or Eire I am insured for third part liability.

If you wanted to check out my Mountain Training profile to see what I’m getting up to, please use the link below:

Drop me a message if you’re interested and we can try to align on some dates. I’m based in the Lake District but will be offering dates in a few different areas throughout the next few months, probably including North Wales, Peak District and the South West.
Thanks in advance, George

I'm struggling to see how anyone could give a thumbs down to your perfectly polite and honest request, given that what you're offering (as far as I can tell anyway) is likely to be of considerable help to inexperienced climbers and at zero cost.

Anyone care to explain?

Agree. They have asked very politely with quite a bit of info. I've benefitted from being a mock pupil before from somebody who advertised on here. They turned out to be great and we met up a few times.

In reply to john arran: I seem to attract dislikes for my slightly off beat sense of humour and  I find it amusing that people either don’t get it or don’t want to get it  but in this case , like you what’s the problem ?

I don't share this opinion but:

I suspect it's the fact that some instructors / guides see posts like this as taking potential work away from them. Why would person x pay them £300 or whatever when trainees, who may or may not be doing a good job, are offering days out for free?

In reply to jezb1:

Would love to know how the instructors that do hold that opinion acquired the experience to get their own qualifications. Presumably they either did the same thing or had already-qualified contacts that let them tag along. If it's the former, that's pretty depressing hypocrisy. If it's the latter, I hope they're paying it forward.

In reply to Luke90:

The majority of people go through the schemes without posting on UKC or similar.

They take out friends, friends of friends, club members, maybe they work at a centre so have people there, contacts / friends in the industry, maybe they volunteer at things like the Women's Trad fest, Student Seminar etc.

Loads of qualified people have trainees along when it's mutually convenient.

I suspect most people going out on free days wouldn't be paying a qualified instructor anyway, but that's just a guess.

To be honest I can’t see that the thumbs up/down feature is anything whatsoever other than divisive and unnecessary.
