I'm getting a 17-year-old into climbing. This is outdoor sport climbing (we don't have any good indoor walls here but do have lots of outdoor sport - not the UK, obviously!) I started climbing a very long time ago, before the internet existed, before a lot of the modern safety standards were 'codified'. I want to point him at a good series of videos and/or articles on the internet, about basic safety procedures and about good technique for beginners. But there is so much stuff out there. Any recommendations?

The Bmc have a series on YouTube and vimeo about this and there are also collections featured on this site. Neil Gresham also has an excellent series on YouTube.

A book called the mountain training handbook volume 2 by libby Peter is about climbing and very good.

Hope helps,

Neil Gresham Masterclass on youtube is very good.

Also, this website accompaniment to a book by David Coley and Andy Kirkpatrick is excellent http://people.bath.ac.uk/dac33/high/ (You'll have to sift for the relevant parts.)

Good site for knots and anchors http://www.chockstone.org/TechTips.htm

Also, check out the BMC TV videos on threading the anchor

I'm new to outdoor and bought a few books, but this is the best video on setting up anchors I've found. Introduces the SERENE system, may be long but easy to watch.
