Got 10 days, probably a round (though possibly one way only - fly back) road trip ex LA, first two weeks of April.
Tentatively aiming towards Tombstone in the hope of getting to Cochise Stronghold - a straight line LA-Phoenix-Tombstone if I recall.
Any suggestions for good / excellent moderate (5.6 to 5.10) areas along this axis? Trad multi-pitch preferred, trad single pitch enjoyed, sport accepted. Any suggestions for guide books or other route / area information sources (tried www.rockclimbing.com)?
Any suggestions for places to stay / camp?
Many thanks for your thoughts!

We were out one November and used the Falcon guide to Arizona.
Didn't go to Cochise Stronghold.
Went to Mt Lemmon did a few routes but a lot of the area was closed.
Did some single pitch bolted stuff at Queen Creek.
Some multi pitch trad stuff at Granite Mountain.
Short bolted and trad routes at Sullivan Canyon and short routes at Granite Dells.
Had a look at Sedona and the Grand Canyon.
We had a mix of camping and motels.

I lived 16 miles from Tombstone for a couple of years, the Stronghold became my local area.

Mt Lemmon is en route and there are some excellent/good routes, but for me the Stronghold always won out.

If you want some recommedations, camping info and the like, drop me a line, there's loads to do at around 5.10, from single to multipitch sport, mixed and pure Trad.

Regards,

Steve

Folks - many thanks for your comments. I have been over on www.supertopo.com as well, and their views broadly echo yours here - looking forward to it!

In reply to dgbryan:

You have got to include a visit to the Grand Canyon - it's awsome!

So long as you are fit and with an early morning start it is possible to go right down to the Colerado river and back up again in a day from the South Rim via Bright Angel Trail, despite all the warning signs against it, but it is a long day. Take plenty of water for the final descent and climb back up again from Indian Gardens - the Colerado is not safe to drink from. Above Indian Gardens there are water points.

Trangia - you are quite right, I did that hike many years ago with a bunch of folks I'd hooked up with in Flagstaff and remember it as one of the more demanding yomps I have undertaken. Admittedly I was fuelled-by-beer at the time, and I remember thinking I was going to die on the last 200 metres to the rim. A magic trip - I wouldn't mind doing it again!
