In reply to Lawrie Brand: Really?

In reply to grumpybearpantsclimbinggoat:

if you want cheaper, it might be worth considering secondhand options - the London Camera Exchange, for instance, often has good deals.

there are definitely good secondhand deals out there because of people upgrading - you can get kit that has more functionality than most of us will ever use, for peanuts!

You can save a whole £19 by fannying about with Jessops cashback vouchers I think (you pay about £260 on an advertised £240 price, then faff around)

There's always <cough> this too

Seems cheap enough. Can't really go wrong with a DSLR and lens for that price, certainly the best 6 megapixel dslr there is (ok fine, not counting those fuji strange ones).
In reply to Richard Carter: Worried about the 6.1 megapixel when all around are showing up as 10 to 12 megapixel though.

Don't be - the camera industry would like us all to believe that it is desperately important to keep with the megapixels, but for the majority of users it isn't. The majority of users are fine with even lower than 6.
In reply to MJH: Cool, thanks

In reply to grumpybearpantsclimbinggoat:

Well it all depends what size you want to print really. For wedding work I used to use a 4 megapixel camera and that was fine for anything that required. But if you're doing large landscape prints then you probably want another camera.

Having said that:

I suppose it depends if you're into photography, or something else...

Not sure of something else - want to get into photography or at least better taking of photos so an entry level SLR is my thinking.

In reply to grumpybearpantsclimbinggoat:

I know I blether on and on and on about it, but something with a liveview back makes a great learning tool - you can see what you're doing as you adjust the dials - something like a Canon G9. I know some of the newer entry level DSLRs have this (Canon 450D?) and I guess some of the Nikons do too.

In reply to grumpybearpantsclimbinggoat:

and also, as you've already mentioned with the Fuji you linked to above, if you're not fixated by having access to a range of lenses, there are lots of really good bridge cameras out there that will do all the other stuff an entry level DSLR can do.
In reply to Tall Clare: bridge cameras?
 Tall Clare 30 Jul 2008
In reply to grumpybearpantsclimbinggoat:

cameras like the Fuji you linked to, that look a bit like an SLR but which don't have interchangeable lenses. I'm sure someone will be along shortly with a better explanation!
In reply to Tall Clare: Ta for reply to numpty - I think I'd like to be able to play with lenses in the future.
 Tall Clare 30 Jul 2008
In reply to grumpybearpantsclimbinggoat:

in which case an SLR is the way forward.
