In reply to Ricky Nos: I've used the 1.8 a fair bit. It's incredibly sharp and really fast. Not used the 1.4.

Thanks
i think for just under £80 the differnce in quality would have to be HUGE (which i dont think it is)

I believe the difference between the two in practice is purely the maximum apeture, not much else. I have the 1.4 and it's a lovely wee lens but I don't think that the 1.8 really loses out in any way other than that 1/3 stop.

I've had a look at a the 1.8, courtesy of a friend. I've also seen a lot of shots taken with this lens and can honestly say that, for the price, you can't really go wrong with the IQ. However, I personally prefer the 35mm f2, for most of the shots where I might consider using either of these lenses. The 35mm has a more "natural" focal length and is better built than the 1.8 (possibly sharper, as well). I can't comment on the 1.4, of course. I would possibly prefer the 50mm primes for some shots at gigs, where the longer focal length might be more important.

Just a little extra food for thought...

Sadly I can't comment on the 1.4 version but I bout mine from a vendor in Hong Kong for £80 ish a few years back and think that it is the Bee's Knees for sharpness.

I don't use it much however here is a shot of my nephew using the lens.

Personally I wish all prime lenses were about this price point.

In reply to jethro kiernan: what kind of money are you after for the 35mm?

In reply to ICE: £65 inc p+p seems about right

In reply to jethro kiernan: ok, just to check then its an af model but not the D, its not ai or ais? glass free of the usual fungus, scratches, finger marks?

I've used one quite a bit. Its really fast. High iso on a d200 and you can take good photos in nightclubs. Everythings out of focus of course, you have to switch to manual and stick the focus somewhere kind of ok and hope, but its a nice lens. Focus is slow though, so dont expect to track anything lively unless you guess where it is and set the focus manually.
Sample photo (doesnt really show the lens off though) http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2331/2047834265_111e124682_o.jpg

I've got one, and it is a cracker of a lense. Doesn't get as much use now I have a f/2.8 zoom, but still great for photos of people.
It is certainly the most lense you will get for your money on nikon. One word of warning, it wont auto focus on the d40

In reply to ICE: Thats correct, a couple of scratches to the body but the glass has always had a filter on.

As everyone else has said the 1.8 is a fantastic lens for the price. Great for portraits or as a small walk-around lens. I must admit that I only tend to use it pretty much wide open.

Sample shot:

I've also found the AF a wee bit slow, but then I'm not using it for sport.

Cheers
Bri.
