I read it at 15 - incredibly sheltered religious upbringing until then - I l could feel my reality melting around me with each turn of the page. Din't leave the house for a couple of days after I finished it.

A great personal statement too. Great for its lack of melodrama or self-pity. As a very lowly 'fellow writer', I am deeply touched .. here is someone who has carved out his creative life fearlessly and relentlessly. I had a very pleasant day in North Queensferry recently. Had no idea he lived there.
