A Peak District roadie question...

The shiny new dot matrix signs at either end of the Snake are saying it'll be closed from 1-14 June for repairs to retaining walls. Would I be right in assuming it'll most likely remain open to cyclists while it's shut to the rest of the traffic?

Yeah. Road signs don't apply to cyclists

The closure notice published in local papers usually includes the phrase:

"A way will be maintained for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists"

Or something similar

Basically meaning ride up to the works, walk through, then ride off again.

Retaining wall repair about 1km off the Glossop side of the Snake Top. Easy to get passed I reckon.

I find it easy to get passed on most climbs.

Sounds like the works you're talking about will be easy to get past though.

Good spot.

Quite right too. They're funded by the road tax, y'see, so the cyclists don't deserve the benefit of road signs.

Ah right, the bit where there's a culvert under the road and a fairly substantial stream flowing through?

I'm no roadie, barely even any kind of a cyclist, but if it's passable then I'll be getting past (and passed) at some point during that couple of weeks.

Thanks all.

Some mates of mine rode it when it was shut a couple of years ago, said it was a great way to enjoy the road without all the usual perils from cars and lorries. And apparently the workmen were very helpful and well used to cyclists going past. I dare say I'll be doing it this year - seems churlish not to !
