Three days before my trip to the Alps, my trusty old Canon G12 has died. Screen is just funny lines (looks like a smashed screen, though it isn't because its not glass), and even using the viewfinder its not taking pictures.

So what should I get now as a last minute replacement? I need something as good if not better than the G12 for quality, and preferably smaller. I have no idea what the best on the market is these days.

I only had 3 gripes with the G12:
1. weight, its like a brick
2. only 10mp (is that relatively small these days?)
3. maximum 15 second exposure. (Could never do those star trails)

Help please.

I replaced my broken G10 with a G15, the improvement is remarkable

G16 ??

1) lighter (just)
2) 12Mp
3) watch the clip....

I'm tempted.

In reply to Fredt:

If you liked the G12, you'll probably like the G16 even better. Lighter, slimmer, and star trails are a doddle,

e.g:

No tilting LCD though, so if this is essential you might be better looking elsewhere.

If very small and light is the main requirement however, many would argue it's difficult to better the Sony RX100 (various iterations now available) - although pricey.

I replaced mine with the Rx100 ii. I like it much better.

I'm currently completely enamored with a X100T

Similarly, I have the original X100.

Best camera I've ever had. I can only imagine the X100S and X100T are even better.

So what did you buy/get/borrow/steal for your trip?

In reply to ChrisJD:

Well, I reluctantly borrowed my wifes Canon Ixus, because I thought I'd see if I could put in an insurance claim on the Canon G12.
To my suprise, they said they would look into repairing it, so a purchase of a new one is on hold.

But if/when I am buying, I'd go for the Canon G7x.

Sensor size is more relevant for picture quality than the number of pixels (at least when you get to over 10mp). You can get reasonably priced cameras with either micro four thirds or APS-C sensors at small size and low weight and likely to be much better specs than cameras with smaller sensors and much better picture quality. They will be more expensive though so it depends on your budget.
