Looking to buy a 40-45 L bag for Crimbo e.g. Black Ice or Alpine 40, but my search remains elusive. Is there anywhere that has stock? Failing that can anyone advise a suitable alternative?

Have you tried Planet X http://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/CCPA50/pod-alpine-50-back-pack they sell Podsacs could e worth a look .

The story of PODsacs is a sad one. Started by Pete O'Donovan who made every sack himself and only supplied a handful of specialist shops. Unfortunately after various climbing injuries Pete found it increasingly difficult to work his sewing machines plus it was getting harder and harder to buy small quantities of suitable fabrics in the UK as nearly all other "manufacturers" outsourced their production to China. He sold POD to Equip (owners of Rab) who initially did some good things with with Pete's help (albeit now made in China) but when they bought Lowe they decided they didn't need two rucksack brands and sold it on to Planet X who are cycle specialists and as far as I can see know zilch about climbing. PX had a batch of Black Ices made (presumably at the same factory Rab used) and we tried to get a sensible deal to retail them, but trying to get a straight reply out of PX was like herding eels. In they end they sold them dirt cheap via their website and now it seems they have all gone. I doubt that there'll be any more - we heard on the grapevine that heads had rolled due to the amount of money they lost in this foray into climbing gear. Stick to what you know is a good motto, but sadly too late for PODsacs which was a great little brand with some really good products. I still have two Black Ices on the go and my wife has another; they get a lot of use and I have yet to see a winter climbing sack that I like as much.

Hi Stephen, that's a real shame - I've got a Black Ice and love it to bits. At the risk of asking you to contravene any possible professional "vested interests", what would you consider to be the nearest equivalent make available today?

Cheers, John

These guys seem to produce a range of good kit: http://www.aiguillealpine.co.uk/shop/4/77/index.htm - I know of a number of Lakes based MICs who swear by it.

I bought my Black Ice from you a few years ago. It's a shame to see such a good brand effectively disappear. However, at least I managed to get 2 Black Ice's very cheap from Planet X for my daughters. Also if my Black Ice lasts as long as my Karrimor Apliniste, it will probably outlast me.
