i have bought two filters,a 720 and a 950 ir filter.
the results are ok but i am guessing nothing like if the ir filter was removed.
there is no way im going to do it to my 60d but have looked at older 20d which you can pick up for 50 quid

anyone removed a filter and was it an ok operation? what were the results like?

It's very commonly done for astrophotography, perhaps try on some of those forums?

Repositioning the sensor to fix the autofocus is possibly the worst bit.
