Logging Onsights?

How does everyone else log a variation route when you have already climbed the original route?

For example I have climbed Cave Route (HS 4b) many times and never looked at its variation, Cave Direct (VS 4c) which I climbed a few days ago. Can I log Cave Direct (VS 4c) as an onsight (I climbed the differing moves clean first time)?

No one really minds, it is only a bone of contention when you competitively compare your performance to someone elses, or they compare theirs to you. This tends to happen when you are climbing with friends (or people you know who aren't friends, but you measure yourself against,) or you are pushing the boundaries of the sport.

And yes you may log Cave Direct as it is a variation, and congratulations. Just be careful to admit to having climbed Cave Route in the past, if anyone questions the ascent.

I usually log that as redpoint/headpoint.

Just be content that what you log you are happy with.

I consider the 'new' part of the climb the thing that I am onsighting. Just be honest what you write down in the logbook; otherwise, who cares? : )
