As I have just got my first phone with a compass sensor I am looking for a free compass app to play with. The play store has lots so I am hoping for a recommendation to save me trying lots of rubbish ones.

ps I am not going to dress in shorts and flipflops and try to cliimb Everest with only my phone for guidance so please no h&s lectures/debates about how reckless it is to step outside your front door without an astrolabe.

I've used Smart Compass which seems pretty decent when I've used it.

Depends what features you want from a digital compass.

But I'd recommend GPS Status, assuming your phone has a GNSS receiver; it does a nice job of getting A-GPS from wifi or mobile data, so you GNSS starts up immediately. It also has a basic compass function.

OS Locate is pretty good, even offers replication of a real compass using the phone camera so that you easily align a map.
