Folks. We are going to the town in Espana in a few weeks time. Any tips for hill walking in the area, best places to visit, decent walks etc. It looks like there are a couple of decent travel/hill guide books which i will purchase, but does anyone know of a decent map of the hills there ????

Thanks all

Mother in law had a house there. Never bothered to get a map but they must exist. Some good walking and interesting summits and ridges best done with pants and boots. Big gorge up in the hills near Frigiliana for which there is/was a guide in paperback. Descended part way without gear which was exciting. Plenty of rock possibilities including the pinnacles in the sea. Jump off a la deep water solo. Have fun.

There are loads in the local area mate including springs and gorge walks in the frigiliana area.

Also the road to Granada has a 1000ft plus via ferrata which is awesome.

Cheers

Used the Discovery Walking Guide for Axarguia, which has adequate maps for the walks. You can also download GPS points from their website which you can drop into ViewRanger (map tiles for Spanish maps are cheap enough). I remember one of the walks from Maro (just east of Nerja) being as good as any walk in more mountainous terrain.

We have stayed several times with a walking friend who has an apartment in Frigliana, and had many happy days walking in the surrounding mountains. Cielo (start from parking area near the Nerja caves)is straightforward (there are a couple of bolted crags in the valley bottom here). The Rio Chillar gorge walk is fun - expect wet feet. Back west is Maroma - we did the Robledal route which was a cracker. Further afield, but a super scramble is Chamizo in very grand limestone country. Hope that helps.
