I'd scout around for some clearance deals rather than going for second hand, generally you can find bargains if you look hard enough, and they won't smell funky.
My absolute favourite best ever climbing shoes (Sportiva Testarossas) were a second foot buy from a notice board at the wall. They were to all intents & purposes new though, the guy reckoned he'd worn them about three times - the classic "ouch bought too small" scenario.
