Its a great place to walk, we did a complete traverse of the massif in 2004, though I can't remember the exact details making the effort to get up Mulhacen was well worth it. We based ourselves at Trevelez, home to nice hams and rugs.
Enjoyed that. I tried to to a circuit from around the white villages, using that gr path but got stuck down with a chest infection. On the last day I felt better so hiked up some random peak from Trevelez, shame the route card I was following was out on the ascent by about 500m, did 1200m ascent that day, I was glad to get back to Trevelez. It's an area I definitely want to go back to!
We planned to go Cappeleira - Trevelez- Busquitar-Cappeleira but circumstances got in the way. There'should accomodation in all those places and trails to the higher mountains too. This site gives loads of info; https://treksierranevada.com
In reply to Ally Smith:
Capileira is the best base for walking - can either use it as a base & walk out of the village, head up towards the Poqueira refuge or follow the GR240 to Trevelez. All depends when you are planning to be there. Winter can be serious as others have discovered; spring is usually lovely, but weather can still be uncertain. June is best month in high mountains.
