Is it as easy as it is in the rest of europe? I've read that "wild camping" is illegal there. If you have tried it I'd appreciate hearing how you got on. It's a long way to drive just to get hassled all the time

Wild camping is illegal in Greece. The enforcement is variable, out in the sticks nobody cares but down by the beach or in the near to a commercial campsite/hotel etc expect to get hassled.
€150 on the spot fine and possibly a court hearing (three months in prison).
It´ s like everywhere, tucked out of the way it´ s fine, in a stupid place it´ s not.

We drove to Greece and spent a lot of time wild camping. We never had any bother. Of course, we always parked up in places that were well away from any sort of civilisation. I think you may get hassled if you were to go parking up near the more touristy areas in the peak season.
