Just wondering if anyone has climbed in Malaysia in the Batu Caves area. We're heading out there next week and know there are lots of bolted routes but there isn't a lot of available info on the internet. Ukc lists a few but says there are much more.

Does anyone know of any websites with info or of any climbing shops over there that are worth heading to for info?

This thread looks like it tells you what you need to know - if you search Batu caves and set it to look for all threads there's a load with similar info.

Enjoy and don't forget to spend a lot of time in the food courts at the malls eating delicious food you lucky things!

I have climbed at Batu on a couple of occasions. An interesting place to climb. We climbed at a couple of sectors. The Nyamuk sector has great rock but the name means "mosquito" in Malaysian language. If you go there you'll quickly figure out the reason for the name! We also climbed at a sector that had a small guiding office and gear shop at the base, in a kind of small park. The climbing was OK...mostly in the 6s. Some great people around and, as others have said, some of the best cheap food I've ever eaten.

We took the train out to the Batu cave temple and had problems finding the crag initially. I don't think we even made it in time to climb on our first attempt, but we did visit the temple. I'd recommend visiting the temple as it's a pretty amazing place.

Hi, i'm living here and Batu is the old favourite, but most of use climb at Takun at weekends now. There are about 300 pitches to count. The info online is not up to date. climb.my
Takun is 280 metres high with grades from 5's to 8c+. Many of the harder routes are awaiting FAs.

Hi Laura, I also live here in KL and here's my advice.
Climbing at Batu Caves is split into 4 parts - Damai is the most extensive and has a range of routes 5+ - 6c. It's landscaped with a pink walkway to keep your ropes dry, shelters and a guides shop which does water. Gets the sun from 10am onwards. Very popular but there's always space to climb. Red Rocks is to the right (as you face Damai) with routes 5c - 7b. White Wall is to the left facing Damai routes are 5c - 7b. The fourth cliff Nyamuk (mosquito) is steeper with routes 6a - 7b. If you go there take mosquito coils and repellent.

Use uber or grab to get there once you've worked out how to get there (it is signed posted off Lebuh Utama Sri Gombok look for Gua Damai). ask to go to Gua Damai not Batu Caves otherwise you'll be taken to the temples there (worthwhile visit afterwards) There are local mamak stalls for food closeby or go to Batu Caves

If you search for Damai you will find topos and articles -

There is an old guidebook- climb malaysia, which is now out of date and hard to get hold of. My copy is gold dust.
