Alps for the summer - accommodation

Hi all,

Considering taking the summer off and heading to the Alps. Roughly mid-June to mid-September. 2 of us. Possible destinations include Chamonix, Arolla, Saas, Ecrins, Gran Paradiso.

For those who have done something like this, what did you do for accommodation? We'd be looking to follow the weather a bit, so will likely take a larger tent and make use of some camp sites.

However I can see the benefit in having a more fixed base somewhere central as well, so I'm wondering whether it's worth looking at a basic apartment/chalet for the season.

Any thoughts/advice? For anyone who has hired accommodation for a season, roughly what did it cost you and where did you base yourself? Would you recommend that approach, or better to just drift with a tent and book any other accommodation as the need/desire arises?

Many thanks,

Michael
