Hi!

We've got a week off work at the end of the month and a vague plan to go camping somewhere in the Lakes or North Wales. We'd quite like to be able to flexible based on the weather, but increasing numbers of campsites these days seem to rely on advance booking, particularly in the school holidays.

Can anyone recommend nice campsites in either area where you can still just turn up and pitch? We'd like to be reasonably handy for big, easy multipitch climbs and scrambles; a decent pub within staggering distance would be a bonus.

Thanks!

Turner Hall, Seathwaite in the Duddon Valley (Lakes). Basic  but pleasant, few minutes to the pub, easy access to all crags in the valley plus Dow. Eskdale just over the hill ( low level granite if you can fight through the bracken, plus Esk Buttress and Scafell itself if you don't mind a walk). Loads to go at. John. Ps vast amounts of excellent scrambling at all altitudes and levels of difficulty.

Chapel House Farm in Borrowdale is decent and well priced.

Assuming it's for a very small group or a family, Gwern Gof Isaf on the A5.  They're funny about groups though, max size is I think 7 and they often go lower at busy times - they're saying 4 for the Bank Holiday which even shuts out some families.

Thanks folks - good suggestions so far and any more would be welcome. It's just the two of us, so no worries about groups.

You'll be into school holidays by then so lots of campsites could be full. Might be sensible to ring ahead and check.

In reply to Ramblin dave: Stonethwaite and Hollows Farm in Borrowdale, both ‘back to basics’ in a good way.

Definitely Chapel House Farm, £6 a night, 50p for showers.
