Re Rock fall

At approx. 12.45 yesterday we were climbing on Castle Rock South when we were startled to hear a loud whooshing/roaring sound that lasted around 10 seconds. We both agreed it wasn’t a plane or anything else we could think of. The noise was soon followed by a large white dust cloud that filled the valley below. At the time we we’re mystified by it all but it seems likely that this was the moment the fall took place

For the record, the two climbers mentioned were Frank Wilkinson/Rodger Bramham

So close. If only you'd got the sort of start we usually do - crack of noon - you might have been still parking or walking up and actually SEEN it. Still - you would seem to have been the nearest thing to an eye witness. Lucky you.

In retrospect can’t believe we didn’t realise what had happened. Had we been in the Alps we would have twigged but the lakes seem so permanent. Prior to it happening I’d actually considered a stroll across the top to have a look at the crack. (Gulp)

Frank Wilkinson writes:  When we first heard the loud whooshing noise, we thought it was yet another RAF jet heading up the valley for Keswick, but immediately discounted that.  Then we saw what we took to be billowing smoke filling the valley bottom – we now realise it was dust! – and assumed the farmer below the crag had started a massive bonfire to burn off rubbish.  If only we’d twigged – we could have been first on the scene.  But Monday was such a glorious day on the South Crag, we didn’t really want to shift!
