Football in a dangerous place at the moment. So Derby we’re very naughty, broke FFP rules, were caught and have been sanctioned by the EFL. Prospective new owners now can’t complete the takeover until issues with Middlesbrough and Wycombe have been resolved.
Middlesbrough want Derby to pay for their ‘losses’ as they missed out on the play offs by a point and Derby just pipped them to the wembley final. Wycombe want Derby to pay for their ‘losses’ as they got relegated but Derby survived by a single point. The perceived losses in both cases being ‘what if’ losses, that is, hypothetical losses and not losses in a real sense.
A dangerous precedent could be set here, it could lead to all sorts of claims in the future. Imagine a ref failing to give a penalty in a key match, TV playback shows the ref was wrong (no VAR in EFL) so the affected club sue the Ref/EFL for their ‘losses’. Reading have had poinds deducted this season too, if they survive the season, will the teams that are relegated then sue Reading for their ‘losses’?
It seems the EFL need to grow a pair and say that once they apply sanctions, that is the end of the matter, further, individual claims would have no grounding. The matter was even debated in parliament yesterday for 40 minutes it’s so big.
Yes I’m a Derby fan so there is vested interest here but, this could be your team next season.
