Looking at a week of camping for a group of families (kids 7 or under) over summer holidays in North Devon (or maybe South Devon... or Wales) and was hoping for some recommendations.

Requirements:

  • Walking distance to a beach (with kids)
  • Nearby bouldering (a few, but not all, are climbers)
  • Nearby surfing (a few. but not all, are surfers)
  • Doesn't mind some noise in the evening (we'll have kids so aren't going to be raving it up every night, but equally aren't going to bed at the same time as them)
  • Bonus #1: Not pitch-based (i.e. could setup tents in a circle)
  • Bonus #2: Allows firepits
  • Bonus #3: Pub within walking distance

Had a lovely time at Three Cliffs Bay a couple of years back (except we got caught by the hurricane...), but rules were a little too strict in terms of where you could pitch, plus it was quite pricey (and there wasn't a pub in walking distance)

In reply to Durbs:

A few sites around Croyde and Woolacombe, such as:

  • Surfers Paradise - Croyde - right on the beach, can get noisy, facilities not great, pubs up road
  • Bay View Farm campsite - Croyde - posher version of above
  • Ocean Pitch campsite - Croyde - ditto
  • Little Roadway - Woolacombe - bit of a walk to the beach/pub, but otherwise ticks for you

Plenty of others a bit further out. Climbing is at Baggy Point, but not really bouldering.

Putsborough/Woolacombe is great for kids and surfing - unless you're good, you can get absolutely battered at Croyde!
