So after 15+ years my Patagonia merino wool long John's have developed a whole in the crotch big enough to crawl through. Didn't realise until I've been looking what a minefield thermal baselayers are. Looking for that balance of warmth and wicking however my legs rarely sweat unlike my top half so thinking merino should be fine. But not a clue on what will provide enough warmth on a Scottish winter belay. Seen a deal on some smartwool all season pants which claim are made of 150 merino wool. Will this be warm enough under a are shell pant.?

Also seen rab synchro but these seemed pretty thin. Keela 200g merino pants which are a good deal As well as Montane XT dart. I wear a Patagonia capilene 2or3 top which works well but the pants are £80

Any suggestions and will 150g merino be warm enough

Cheers

I have icebreaker 200s, which I like but normally I would use them under a softshell rather than a hardshell (the softshell provides some warmth in its own right). For under a hardshell, I really like the Arcteryx Rho bottoms, which are essentially fleece leggings. I would be too cold in 150 weight merino I think (and I don't run particularly cold).

150 weight merino won't provide much warmth. I'd say 200 would be much better, esp under just a hardshell.

My friend showed me some fleece lined tights she got from Tesco. I would highly recommend them. Cheap, warm and soft feeling.

Polartec power stretch by rab are top tier. Much warmer than anything else I’ve used, think mainly due to decently windproof by themselves, deal with sweat pretty well on walk ins also.

Not sure if these are still available but the mountain equipment switch pant are great either under soft shell or over trousers and can be worn on their own for the walk in👍

If they still stay up and you're not going without undercrackers there's still life left in them.

My Icebreaker 200g leggings (which have done the same thing, crotch-wise) were adequate for winter belays. My legs don't get too cold, though, and I've tended to put more favour in not-too-sweaty rather than toasty-warm.
My replacement pair are a merino-synthetic blend, in the hope they'll be a little sturdier.

Ron hills all the way for me. Warm enough and wick nicely under hard shell plus the added benefit of retro coolness when stalking around the hut in the morning.
