Hi All,

My wife and I have booked some flights to Geneva with sleasy jet, but now looking for accommodation in Chamonix. I see Vagabonds Gite is closed permanently.

So the question is where do you stay when in the valley.

What cheap accommodation would you recommend.

Happy to stay in Les Houches or Argentiere.

All the accommodation looks a bit pricey on booking . com

Looks like very convenient for the bus stop.

Do you book direct or via something like booking . com ?

Edit - Mmm, I might have missed the joke in that one.

The missus and I are a little past dossing in public spaces, especially when they shut for the night and kick you out into the night. That happened in Alaska, and all the transport to the town had left. Bit cold that night !

Depends what you call pricey, even camping isn't cheap. Have you tried rockypop hostel. Not cheap, but less than most other room based accommodation.

the lovely woman who runs it (Véronique) doesn't seem very keen on booking.com.  If you turn up in person there is virtually always space.  Not helpful if you are coming from the UK I realise.

I like the Vert Lodge at Les Gaillands, it's an East walk into town and close to a station and bus stop of you want to travel further.

 Nope no joke,

Veronique is a great woman, no internet booking but either give her a call or email.
Great location, decent kitchen and sitting area.

she takes cash that’s it. the last few years I have been I have booked, it’s always seemed pretty full, the odd bed hear maybe.
If you google it she has a website with contact details on.

Another vote for vert too. Just a bit outside town though.

Thanks all, looks like I have a few options now.

Not sure if the train is free for tourists, just thought it was the bus. Anyone know at all ?

In reply to Raymondo:

You should get a card from your accommodation that covers both buses and trains between Vallorcine and, I think, Sallanches.

It certainly covers all the places I have wanted to travel to whilst staying in the valley.

In reply to timjones:

Glad it covers the train, the bus can be a bit slow for longer distances.
