Mick Fowler and Victor Saunders have made the first ascent of Yawash Sar in the Karakoram. 40 years after their first trip to Pakistan, Fowler and Saunders returned to the country and climbed the north west face of the 6,258m peak, reaching the summit during a seven-day outing from base camp. The expedition was supported by Berghaus and the two climbers used kit from the brand's high performance Extrem range.

Is it strange that this is tucked away in press releases, not news. And that the only 2 comments so far are age related banter? Am I missing something?

I have no idea about the relative merits of this climb, but gathering that another party was unsuccessful, it sounds like an achievement. Congratulations are definitely in order.

if saga organised trekking holidays ………

( and before anybody else nabs my idea I ve already contact saga with my new suggestion for an “ extreme Himalayan first acesents “ section to thier catalogue ( people over 60 don’t look at so called websites ) . After some explaining as to what this would entail the woman on the phone made a very derisory snorting sound and hung up .

This is really inspiring stuff. The ascent sounds gruelling enough, but for Mick to even attempt this after his cancer recovery and in a partnership that has lasted 50 years is brilliant. There’s an interview with them here https://www.outsideonline.com/outdoor-adventure/climbing/mick-fowler-victor...

I always enjoy hearing of Mick's "holidays" and it's great to hear he and "slippery Vic" are still tearing it up, doing things far harder than (m)any on here especially with an average age of 71.

The addition of the colostomy chat just demonstrates the wonders of the human spirit in finding the silver linings in difficult situations. Much as there is laughter in the discussion it must be a complete embuggerance to have a colostomy and e.g. use a rucksack hip belt, or try and unfreeze the adhesive of a new bag in a hanging belay. I have even more respect for him than before. Here's hoping there's another book in the works!
