Any opinions on the OMM Rotor smock? I like the idea of a small insulated smock for autmun days. And how big is the packed size - does it stuff into a pocket?

It stuffs into it's own hand warmer pocket, so still quite bulky, making an excellent pillow with a fluffy surface. It's an excellent piece of kit IMHO.

I stuff mine into a compression dry bag and it’s about 1.5l fully compressed (13cm diameter x 12cm height in the bag I use). It’ll probably go a bit smaller with a smaller stuff sack. I’ve never stuffed it into the pocket, so don’t know how that compares. That’s for a size medium, bought in 2011, don’t know if OMM has changed sizing since then.

I agree it’s a great top, the best warmth/weight ratio of any non-down top I’ve tried. I’ve found it ideal for lightweight backpacking/bivvying (camp/tent/sleeping wear etc), as a back-up layer for winter long distance races and as a general spare layer for stops when hillwalking etc.

I find it way too warm to use when moving and it gets clammy easily, even when temperatures have been around -10°C but I run warm generally, so might be fine for you. I also don’t think the outer fabric would survive long directly under a rucksack but probably ok with something over it.

Hope that helps.

I love mine. It seems expensive for what it is but it's excellent for a variety of uses and I've had full value out of mine. The only thing is it's not very durable but that's to be expected with the very lightweight material.

Out of total nosiness, why the smock and not the hooded jacket? And use it like the smock, but fully unzip if you start to feel too warm

They're actually very different products with different types of insulation.

Thanks. I read in reviews about the pillow, which sounds quite useful.

Thanks - sounds a bit bigger than I'd thought. Your uses sounds similar to mine. Useful comment about the possible fragility of the fabric - something to bear in mind.

Thanks. The price is reduced on the OMM website at the moment, so the value for money seems quite good.

Personal preference really - I like smocks and zip-tops.

It says it's not available in the UK from their website.

Yeah, I'd have had another at that price!
