Hey,

So I was looking at possibly getting a new waterproof in the new year and saw that the berghaus trango and mera peak have been reissued. I'm a bit skeptical on whether or not they would actually be up for some proper use or would i be better looking elsewhere for something similar

Cheers

I'd say in terms of materials the Trango should be fine for serious hill use. The Mera Peak is 2L GTX which doesn't like abuse and rucksacks so I'd steer clear of that.

The major point of contemplation is that hardshell design has evolved over the last decades, so given their price point I'd be inclined to go for something more modern.

Depends on how much you want to look like a 90s northern indie rock star? https://www.livefortheoutdoors.com/hiking/jackets/oasis-berghaus-collab/

Actually I remember I think the drummer in either a Charlatans or Inspiral Carpets vid wearing an Alpine Extreme in a video back in the early 90s. I already really wanted one of those jackets, even more so after seeing that.

In reply to TobyA:

That's what sort of puts me off them as they seem to be more focused on being for more about town then proper abuse up in the hills.

In reply to Thomas Hardbattle: It wouldn't be my choice but that mostly as I don't need the pockets and I'd prefer Goretx pro.  But it would be fine. What would you get instead?

It's not like it's suddenly terrible

I had a Trango back in the day (88/89) and lived in it. It was up for proper use though I also liked the pose value as it seemed like everyone who was anyone was wearing them. Even back then it wasn't that great, lots of unnecessary stitching for the sake of looks, WTF is that square in the middle of the back all about? When I eventually admitted there were better jackets out there I sold it in a very used and leaky state to someone who wanted it because of it's iconic look rather than function. I replaced it with a Patagonia Storm jacket which was of a similar date but much better in terms of fit, durability and waterproofness if not breathability.

I reckon the cheaper one with the yellow hood might be better, a friend had one and it was much simpler, though it's still a 35+ year old design.

So if you want one buy one but if you want the best jacket you can afford then buy something modern at the same price.

F-uck me. Berghaus equipment has always been fairly mediocre, but they're scraping the bottom of the barrel with that campaign.

I remember working in the old Outside in Llanberis in the earlyish 90’s and the Berghuas rep was in and I remember asking in a cocky youth smart Alec  kind of way about all the panels and stitching (and the yellow panel) on the jacket increased visibility to help mountain rescue apparently, a dig in the ribs from the manager stopped me hassling the poor bloke any more.

In reply to wbo2:

Probably something along the lines of  mountain equipment lhotse or rab latok but I'm open to other brands and goretex equivalents

Dear God. That will make it the shoplifter's favourite.

I could only think it was to maximise the use of expensive fabric back then.

On the other hand, wasn't it yellow? In which case, there wouldn't be a weird offcut, as they didn't make a predominantly yellow version...

When I worked in an outdoors shop years ago, one of my colleagues used to slate them both as being far too "busy" with pockets and stitching.

The Mera Peak was pretty much standard issue to BBC reporters at one point - earning them the nickname Berghaus Broadcasting Corporation!
